GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Community College rescheduled its 103rd commencement for Saturday, Aug. 1 due to coronavirus pandemic.

This is not a COVID19 story. It’s not about sickness, job loss or any of the stresses we are going through at this time. It’s a feel-good story about a man who has meant so much to so many in West Michigan. A man that has made and continues to make, this a better world.

Grand Rapids Community College is awarding Emeritus Faculty status to a man who has put his musical stamp on countless students as well as the West Michigan arts community.

Colleges and universities grappling with fall 2020 semester plans

The pandemic has looked like many things for higher education institutions: empty classrooms amid remote learning, virtual commencements and Zoom calls to welcome the incoming freshman class. But, the greatest challenge of all may be planning to bring everyone back.

… Davenport University and Aquinas College both say they are expecting to announce a final decision within the next few weeks. Central Michigan and Grand Rapids Community College said they are both still in planning stages. And Michigan State University says its final decision will not come until midsummer, however, the Lansing school is making plans for a return to campus.

… Additionally, Hanks teaches financial literacy classes at the Grand Rapids Urban League, Inner City Christian Federation, Steepletown Neighborhood Services and area churches and businesses. She studied Business Administration at Grand Rapids Community College and Davenport University.

The righthander out of Grand Rapids Central High School pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 1977-1984 and concluded his career with the Rangers (1985-86). Rozema compiled an overall record of 60-53 with 17 saves. He went 7-6 in Detroit’s 1984 championship season, although he did not pitch in the postseason.

(This article doesn’t mention it, but Dave Rozema is a GRJC alumnus.)
