IT Notification – Off-Campus Technology Reminders

Information Technology has three important reminders for you as some of us continue working remotely.

  • Your campus network password expires every 120 days. If you experience a loss of access to one of your accounts, you can update your password here or by clicking on the Forgot Password link located on the MyGRCC sign in page. This will replace your password across all GRCC services with the exception of your Windows login password on any GRCC issued laptop. To sync a new password with your laptop login, simply visit campus and log into the laptop with the expired password once more.
  • If your equipment has not been on campus since March you may begin seeing a loss in functionality to Microsoft Office and Windows 10. To avoid any loss of functionality, simply stop by the parking lot of the Administration Building and connect to the GRCC Secure wireless network. Restarting your device and connecting to our Secure wireless network for a minimum of 15-30 minutes will revalidate your Office and Windows licenses automatically. If you choose to come into a campus building, we kindly ask that you fill out the COVID Return to Campus form and wear a mask per our current campus protocols.

Note: We understand, however, that not everyone can visit campus. If you’re not able to stop by, please call Information Technology’s Support Desk at 616.234.4357 and we can discuss alternative options.

  • Windows updates are critical for maintaining your computer’s functionality and security. While away from campus you should be regularly checking for updates. Remember, Microsoft updates require a system restart. Complete these steps only when you’re at a good stopping point. You’ll be notified several times before your computer restarts.

  2. Click the Settings Icon.
  3. Click on the Update & Security button.

Note: If you receive a message stating your device cannot connect to an update point, proceed to the Checking Online for Microsoft Update section.

GRCC, Ferris State University partnering to keep basketball players safer through weekly COVID-19 testing

Covid test being performed.

Grand Rapids Community College is testing basketball players for COVID-19 weekly through a partnership with Ferris State University, saying the college is committed to keeping student-athletes safe while competing.

Interim Athletic Director David Selmon said the testing exceeds safety protocols prescribed by the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.

Through a partnership with the Ferris College of Pharmacy, students, coaches and training staff participating in contact sports will receive weekly antigen tests, with results available in about 15 minutes. The tests are administered by Ferris faculty and students, and are planned to continue through the end of the season.

“We’ve adopted several protocols to keep our student-athletes as safe as possible during the pandemic,” Selmon said. “This is an additional step, but we think it is an important one for teams competing in contact sports. Ferris has been an excellent partner for GRCC over the years, and we appreciate being able to work together on this testing.”

GRCC Athletics is closely following safety guidelines from the NJCAA and MCCAA, including requiring face coverings, social distancing where possible and prohibiting spectators from the arena during games. That’s in addition to GRCC policies, which include daily health screenings and frequent deep cleanings.

Kudos to the GRCC Family

From a student:

“To whom it may concern,

I am a student of GRCC. I can’ t ever remember a time in my educational experience, staff being so committed to helping students with their educational experience.  I enrolled in the Summer 2020 HVAC/R Program with some appreciation for Grand Rapids Community College’s history of bringing a sense of community to education.

I discovered, as problems arise all around the United States, staff at GRCC are committed to removing barriers for its students.  All the program instructors, especially, Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Feutz, made it possible for success. I feel recognition is needed for their ability to teach their classes with real world leadership.

The others needing mention would be the computer lab assistants working the afternoon of the 15th.  They exemplified the Raider spirit most of us can hope for in ourselves. They expressed knowledge and understanding of student needs, the requirements of the job, and were able to assist the IT Department in helping myself and two classmates resolve problems accessing our final exam.”

Mary Johnson shares update on Van Marnius Swets Travel Award

Mary Johnson, Adjunct Reference Librarian, says, “Thank You again for 2020 Swets Travel Award!”

Picture of crafting tools.

Greetings! I wanted to say thank you again for my 2020 Van and Marinus Travel Award. With little travel opportunities available in 2020, I used the award to purchase items that would make creative activities at home easier with the right tools.

Cooking, sewing and other crafting all benefited with the pictured tools, and journeys to the land of frustration and annoyance were minimized. The combo self-healing mat/ironing surface comes in very handy when making masks! Thank you so much!

Mary Johnson
