As part of the implementation of the 988 number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, changes are being made in the 616 area code for making local calls.
Beginning October 24, 2021 all local calls must be made using the full 10-digit number. For example, if you live in Grand Rapids and wanted to call GRCC you would dial 616-234-4000 instead of 234-4000.
Beginning on April 24, 2021 anyone who makes a local call using 7 digits may be presented with a notification of the change before the call is completed.
Since it is difficult to distinguish local numbers from long distance numbers in the 616 area code, it is common for someone to dial an 11 digit number (1-616-234-4000) because the call will go through. GRCC will continue to support this type of dialing and we will convert long distance calls to local ones where appropriate.
The final phase of the change will take place on July 16, 2022 when the 988 number will become active. Until that date, continue to use 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. After that date, either number will work.
