Name change for Cashier’s Office

Student Financial Services Office is the new name for the Cashier’s Office, better reflecting the help team members provide to GRCC students.

“We want students to know that our office can assist with more than just tuition payments,” director Jennifer Kowalski said. “We can assist them with or answer any questions they may have about residency, refunds, payment plans, tuition due dates, billing and so much more.”

The name change goes into effect today. The team is temporarily located on the third floor of the Student Center while its space in Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall is renovated.

My GRCC Story: ‘Michigan’s Best Doughnut’ winner Jeff Meyer says GRCC prepared him for success

Start at GRCC and go anywhere. Every former student has a story to tell about how GRCC gave them the education and opportunity to be successful.

After coming close with an honorable mention in 2014, Jeff Meyer now knows how victory tastes.

His business, Meyers’ Bakery & Beanery in Lake Odessa, is home to MLive’s 2020 Michigan’s Best Doughnut

But running the bakery that produced the No. 1 doughnut takes more than just a winning recipe, and Meyer still draws on what he learned at Grand Rapids Junior College.

He came to GRJC’s culinary program with a passion for cooking.

“I had worked in a couple of restaurants but wasn’t exactly sure what direction I was going, but GRJC gave me various experiences in the culinary field and, with the help of some top chefs and hospitality associates, gave me knowledge of things I had no clue of coming from a small farming community,” he said.

Tech Tip: Utilizing multiple desktops

If you are a single-monitor user (or even if you use an external monitor) it may be handy to have multiple virtual desktops. Juggling different projects on the same computer can be tricky but using a virtual desktop can be very similar to using multiple monitors giving you more space to work.

Multiple desktops are great for keeping unrelated, ongoing projects organized, or for quickly switching desktops before a meeting. You can add an unlimited number of them as well.

How to create multiple desktops:

  1. On the taskbar, select Task View pane (two overlapping rectangles) > New desktop (Shortcut Windows Key + Tab)
  2. Open the apps you want to use on that desktop
  3. Switch between desktops by selecting Task View again and clicking on the desktop you would like to go to (Shortcut Windows Key + Ctrl + Left or Right arrows)

How to move windows between desktops:

  1. Open the Task View pane and then hover over the desktop containing the window you want to move.
  2. The windows on that desktop will pop up. Find the window you would like to move and right-click it, and go to Move to and choose the desktop you would like to move the window to.
  3. You can also drag and drop windows. Grab the window you would like to move and drag it into the desired desktop.

How to close a desktop:

  1. Open the Task View pane and hover over the desktop you want to close until a small X appears in the upper right corner.
  2. Click the X to close the desktop. (Shortcut Windows Key + Ctrl + F4)

Ford Fieldhouse Updates

Summer has finally arrived! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. We wanted to take the opportunity to not only update you, but thank you for your continued support and patience.  We would not be here if it wasn’t for you!

We have a couple of updates for you to get the summer semester rolling:

Mask Update

As you may know, the Governor recently announced the new mask policy for the state.  However, the Ford Fieldhouse’s policies will remain the same until further notice. Wearing of a face mask will be required in all spaces in the building and during your workout.  The only time a mask is not required is while you are actively swimming in the pool.  As we receive more guidance from the college about this new mask policy, we will update you.

Starting May 24th, the Ford Fieldhouse Lobby will have some construction happening near the concession stand.  Although the hallway will be obstructed, you will still be able to walk through to the aquatics facility, vending machines, and restrooms.

Summer Hours

The hours for the fitness center and pool have not changed, but I have attached a friendly reminder of what those hours look like.

As always, please don’t hesitate to call or email us with any questions. Thank you for your patience and understanding once again, and we will keep you as updated as we can.
