Celebration of life services for former GRCC professor Mike Franz

Former GRCC professor Mike Franz taught at GRCC in Language Arts and Film departments and passed away in late September 2020 of complications of pneumonia (Condolences).

A celebration of life service is planned to be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 Fulton E. in Grand Rapids. The entrance is from the west side and service is in Centennial Hall, on Friday, July 9 at 11 a.m.

Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to service.  Lunch will follow.  Please RSVP to Mari Franz at mari49546@gmail.com so she can plan for the luncheon.

All are welcome and invited to celebrate this very deserving man.

Ransom street closure

Beginning Tuesday, July 6, Ransom Street between Lyon and Fountain will be closed to through traffic for a steam leak repair. 

Students/guests will still be able to access and exit the top of the Bostwick Ramp from the north end or Ransom. Access to the ATC parking facility will also remain open.  The project is expected to be completed within 3 weeks.

Ford Fieldhouse update for students

I hope all of you are doing well, staying healthy, and enjoying your summer, although the rain is putting a damper on it. I just wanted to give you all some good news regarding some upcoming changes at the Ford Fieldhouse. Starting on Tuesday, June 29th the following changes will go into effect: 

*NEW* Policy Changes

  • No longer required for the fitness center or pool: 
    • Masks
    • COVID Screenings
    • Appointments
  • Capacity limits have been lifted
  • Check-in Process for the Fitness Center
    • Present RaiderCard to staff member at desk outside of fitness center 
    • Once granted access, user can tap their card to enter the fitness center
  • Check-in process for the Pool 
    • Present RaiderCard to lifeguard staff at table
    • Once granted access user can proceed to swim 

Policies Still in Effect

  • Free weight rooms and the arena/track are still closed to everyone 
  • Fitness Center Equipment will still be socially distanced
  • Pool users are encouraged to social distance when possible as well
  • The $3.00 daily user pass for the Pool is still not allowed at this time
  • Valid RaiderCards are mandatory for entry. Your RaiderCards will be activated to allow you access to the locker rooms.  Please feel free to use either locker room.
  • The locker rooms and showers will be available; however, towels will NOT be provided at this time

REMINDER: Fitness Center Hours 

  • Monday-Thursday: 8am-6pm 
  • Friday: 8am-4:30pm 
  • Saturday/Sunday: CLOSED

REMINDER: Open Swim Hours 

  • Monday and Wednesday: 6:00am-8:15am 
  • Monday-Thursday: 10am-1:30pm 
  • Friday/Saturday/Sunday: CLOSED

Good things on The Lakeshore for June 25, 2021

Each week Shandra Martinez, managing editor of The Lakeshore, talks to WHTC morning-news anchor Peg McNichol about people and organizations making a difference along the Lakeshore. Below are some of the highlights of their conversation on June 25, 2021. 

… Classes still available for GRCC’s second summer semester. Classes remain available during Grand Rapids Community College’s second seven-week summer semester, which starts June 29. GRCC has availability in programs including computer information systems, business administration, math, biology, and psychology. 

Michigan Reconnect helps more than 1,100 students attend GRCC tuition-free. More than 1,100 students are attending Grand Rapids Community College through the Michigan Reconnect program. Participants in the program, which has accepted 70,000 Michiganders statewide, can work toward an associate degree or a career skills certificate — in some cases tuition-free.

Hampton University announces three new members of football staff

HAMPTON, Va. (HamptonPirates.com) – Head coach Robert Prunty announced today three new additions to his 2021 football staff in inside wide receivers and tight end coach Ollie Taylor, safety coach Nick Newsome and strength & conditioning coach Andrew Bates.“I am very excited to have these three coaches join our staff,” Prunty said. “They’ll be assets to our program.”

… Bates joined Jacksonville from Marshall University where he spent the previous two years as a graduate assistant. Prior to Marshall, Bates has completed internships at Michigan State University and Wayne State University. A two-year letter winner in football at Grand Rapids Community College and Wayne State University, Bates served as captain in 2005 at GRCC winning the NJCAA Non-scholarship National Championship. In 2008, Bates served as captain at WSU leading the program to an 8-3 record tied for most wins in school history at the time.

Blackboard planned maintenance on 07/04/21

Information Technology will be conducting planned database maintenance for Blackboard on Sunday, July 4. This maintenance will run from 12:30 AM-4:30 AM EST.
