Come to the Grand Rapids Comic-Con Summer Bash this weekend dressed like a pretend superhero, and leave ready to gain the skills to become a real one – and maybe even win a special replica of Thor’s famed hammer!
Members of the Grand Rapids Community College Job Training team will be at the event from Friday to Sunday in the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, showing off sci-fi-themed projects they’ve created in the college’s labs and sharing how the skills used to produce them lead to rewarding careers.
Faculty and staff will be on hand to talk about Information Technology and Machine Tooling classes. Guests can get a close look at projects that include replicas of Iron Man’s mask, Star Wars lightsabers, and Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer.
Guests can enter a free drawing to win Mjolnir, designed and created using a combination of CNC milling and turning machines in the new state-of-the-art manufacturing lab in GRCC’s Wisner- Bottrall Applied Technology Center.
According to legend, only those “deemed worthy” are able to lift Mjolnir. Guests are invited to stop by the GRCC Job Training booth and test their worthiness, pose for photos and enter their name for the drawing.
“Many of the people attending Comic-Con will be interested in learning about the skills used to create these projects, and might not be aware programs are available at GRCC,” said Andrew Beach, CNC machine tooling instructor. “These 18-week programs will prepare students for rewarding careers in automotive, aerospace, health care and other essential fields.”
GRCC Job Training team members will be in booth 116. Event hours are noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the DeltaPlex, 2500 Turner Ave. NW in Grand Rapids.
Volunteers are needed to help with the Information Station that will be outside of the new Enrollment Center in RJF beginning next week. There will be two weeks of tabling in this area to help students with wayfinding.
Please see the new tab ‘RJF Info Station Wk 1’ and fill in as your schedule allows. Consider the other tabs as well if you are interested: Fall 2021 Info Station
And if you haven’t already, please update the Information Station Resources document particular to your department and current operations. This document will help inform what the volunteers share with students of the services/hours/changes in your area.
There may be information copied in from last year, so please read thoroughly and make necessary edits with Fall start in mind.
Thank you!! 🙂

It’s that time: We are looking for volunteers to help with the Information Stations! As you may know, volunteers at the Information Stations help our students feel welcome and find their way around campus. This will be especially important this semester!
This year, we are holding an information table outside of the new Enrollment Center prior to Fall start. The first three days of Fall start will be the stations set up around campus like in the recent past. As you look at the volunteer sign-up sheet, please take note of the two different tabs to sign up accordingly!
RJF Info Station: August 23-27 from 10:00am-3:00pm
Semester Start Stations: August 30-September 1 from 7:00am-6:30pm

Details about Information Stations that may look a bit different this semester:
We are inviting two volunteers to each station, but please prioritize filling each station so we can guarantee coverage for the 2-hour commitments.
- Please follow the current campus protocols while working at the information station to minimize contact and germ spreading.
- Each station will have two tables and 2 chairs in addition to plexiglass barriers and signs indicating wayfinding.
- Instead of having a binder of information that everyone thumbs through, a Google doc. will have all relevant information. This will allow us to keep information up-to-date as things change.
- Please bring your GRCC-issued laptop or tablet to access the Google doc. of information (again, to minimize the spread of germs).
- Handouts at each station will include campus maps, Sneden shuttle flyers and GetHelp cards.
- Please plan on bringing your own water and snacks as these will not be provided.
There will be hand sanitizer at each table. We will also have antibacterial wipes so the table can be wiped down at the end of each shift.
We are excited to be hosting Raider Rally and Involvement Day in person again this year! These two events are awesome opportunities to welcome new and returning students back to campus and to recruit them to your organizations.
Sign up to reserve a table today!
- Raider Rally will be hosted on Saturday, August 28, 10am – 1:30 pm on the Olivarez Plaza.
- Involvement Day will be hosted Wednesday, September 8, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm on the Olivarez Plaza.
We will provide more information as the dates approach! If you have questions, please let us know by calling 616-234-4160, emailing email@example.com or stopping by our office; first floor of the Student Center! We’re excited to see you.
