‘Years in the making,’ GRCC transforms former JC Penney into modern learning space, community hub

HOLLAND, MI – A former JC Penney Department Store has been transformed into a contemporary learning space and community hub in Holland Township.

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) held a ribbon cutting Thursday, Aug. 19 where local officials, alumni and some community members got to check out the newly-renovated 50,000-square-foot Lakeshore Campus opening this fall semester.

Campus child care helps student parents

A few years ago, some community colleges cut back on child-care services as demand fell. But since the pandemic began, need has grown as parents of young children found it hard to study at home with their children underfoot or they had to find affordable care while they worked.

Colleges have different approaches to child care. Some, like Clark College in Washington and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) in Michigan, have a child-care center right on campus. At those two colleges and some others, the child-care center is coordinated with students in the early childhood education program, who use the center as a learning lab. (See sidebar.)

Tech Tips: Password expiration reminder

Did you know the MyGRCC password expires every 120 days? If you are experiencing issues signing into any of the GRCC systems such as (but not limited to) VMWare, PeopleSoft, Campus WiFi or staff email, your password may be expired. It is best to make a habit of resetting your password every semester. Your MyGRCC password must be at least 10 characters long, have a capital letter, and include at least one number. To reset your password follow the steps found here.:

Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) Grant

The GRCC Grants Department is accepting applications for the Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) grant program. The purpose of the award is to encourage support staff to improve their professional skills related to their GRCC assignments. Awards are for amounts up to $2,500 and the deadline is Friday, September 10, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

The SSPD application packet and guidelines are available on the Grants Department webpage at grcc.edu/sspdgrants. Applications must include a supervisor’s approval form, a budget form, and budget documentation. Be sure to read and follow the application and guidelines carefully.
