Michigan professor strives to diversify the field of music education

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Shannon Shaker says she was in her third year of graduate school when she realized she had never programmed a single piece of music that was composed by a woman.That revelation inspired Shaker, who is the new director of bands at Grand Rapids Community College, to dedicate her career to creating more equitable and inclusive practices in the field of music, and helping more women become composers.
