14 tutors earn certification

A total of 14 tutors fulfilled the training, experience and other requirements for College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Level I certification. CRLA is a national organization of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college/adult level. Academic Support Center hosts tutor training

On January 6, 2015, the Academic Support Center offered its semiannual tutor training to 29 new tutors.

During the event, new tutors experienced a “Role of the Tutor” session presented by Don VanOeveren; a session exploring the “12 Steps of Tutoring” presented by Jeff Stone; a scavenger hunt of the different tutoring centers on campus; an interactive activity helping new tutors identify diverse learning styles and improve communication skills; the “Run, Hide, Fight” presentation by Officer Tony Myers; and a session of interactive tutoring scenarios facilitated by Holly Hoare and Colleen Copus.

Condolences to the friends and family of David Slezak

David Slezak, valued colleague and longtime tutor in the ATC Tutorial and Open Computer lab, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening after experiencing cardiac arrest on Sunday, Oct 12.

Dave was a very special person who persevered through many challenges but always enjoyed coming to the “lab” and assisting our students. He will be deeply missed.

His family will receive visitors Friday 2 – 7 pm at Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary – Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd NW. Academic Support Center – Mid-Semester Break Office Hours

During the week of March 4th – March 8th, the Academic Support Center Office will be open from  8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with limited services. All tutorial services and computer labs with the exception of the ATC Open Computer Lab will be closed during Mid-Semester Break. Please check the ATC Open Computer Lab’s website http://cms.grcc.edu/atcopenlab for their posted hours.

On January 7 and 8, 2013, the Academic Support Center offered its semiannual Tutor Training to over 100 tutors.

On the first day of the event, new tutors experienced a Role of the Tutor session presented by Yumi Watanabe, a session exploring the 12 Steps of Tutoring presented by Jeff Stone, a Scavenger Hunt of the different tutoring centers on campus, and an interactive tutoring scenarios session presented by Jenni Klutts.

On the second day, all tutors participated in a Cross-Cultural Tutoring session presented by Tamber Bustance and Kathleen Owens, a MyDegreePath degree audit software presentation by Lynnae Selberg and Erin Busscher, and a panel discussion on Encouraging Independent Learning facilitated by Kellie Roblin.

Raider Salute to tutor trainers

The Academic Support Center would like to send out a Raider Salute to Lynnae Selberg, Erin Busscher, Kathleen Owens and Tamber Bustance for presenting at the January Tutor Training, which was held last week at the Calkins Science Center.

Over 100 new and returning tutors participated in presentations on the MyDegreePath degree audit software (Lynnae and Erin) and Cross Cultural Tutoring (Kathleen and Tamber). The feedback from the tutors regarding these presentations was very positive and many tutors expressed that the material covered would easily be applied in their work this semester.
