David Slezak, valued colleague and longtime tutor in the ATC Tutorial and Open Computer lab, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening after experiencing cardiac arrest on Sunday, Oct 12.
Dave was a very special person who persevered through many challenges but always enjoyed coming to the “lab” and assisting our students. He will be deeply missed.
His family will receive visitors Friday 2 – 7 pm at Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary – Remembrance Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd NW. Academic Testing Services will have limited hours of operation during Mid-Semester Break from March 3-8, 2014.
Mid-Semester Break Hours of operation: Monday-Saturday 8:00 am-5:00 pm
The Academic Testing Center will be performing a software upgrade on Friday, Nov 15, 2013 from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM. It is anticipated that there will be minimal interruption to our standard testing services.

The Academic Testing Center will be closed on Saturdays for the summer and will reopen September 14, 2013.
The Academic Testing Center will be open March 30, 2013, during Easter weekend.

GRCC welcomes La’Ontae Carter (but everyone in the Academic Testing Center and surrounding offices knows her as Tae). She began her support professional journey here at the Academic Testing Center as a student worker. After receiving her A.A. with MACRAO, she transferred to Grand Valley. Grand Rapids Community College gave her the opportunity to work as a contingent employee in the same department. Currently, she is the Evening and Weekend Academic Testing Proctor. She currently is in her last semester at GVSU pursuing a B.S. in Psychology and a B.B.A. in Accounting. Soon after graduation she will begin her M.S.A. in Accounting at Davenport University.
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and teaching her 5 year old son, Jason, how to read, write, add, and subtract.

On Thursday, January 6, 135 new and returning tutors arrived on campus for Academic Supports Semi-annual All-Tutor Training. New tutors experienced an introduction from the NEW Director of Academic and Developmental Support Services, Yumi Watanabe, a practical Role of the Tutor session, and a campus-wide Scavenger Hunt. All tutors enjoyed a social lunch followed by an informative talk by Sara Dorer on how to deal with incivility.
On Wednesday, August 25, 130 new and returning tutors arrived on campus for Academic Support’s Semi-annual all Tutor Training. New tutors experienced an inspiring talk from Master Tutor Trainer and past president of the Association of Tutoring Projessionals, Jim Valkenburg. This was followed by a practical “Role of the Tutor” session from the Director of Developmental and Academic Support, Raju Hegde, and a campus-wide Scavenger Hunt. All tutors enjoyed some fun lunch-time activities followed by an informative talk by Mary Beth Van Till on generational differences.
