Andrew Bifulco won the Best of Show in the Motor City mixed-media arts competition. It was an arts competition sponsored by Lawrence Technological University. The muse for the competition was founded upon Detroit’s classic nickname, and challenged aspiring artists, designers, and architects to deconstruct, challenge, expand, contract and otherwise reposition this well-worn phrase.

The following is an excerpt from Andrew’s artist statement: “This piece represents the idea that perhaps cutting edge technology and sexy new designs are not the answer to Detroit’s troubling situation. Many residents have started urban community farms. There is a growing culture of cycling enthusiasts and makers of handmade and artisanal goods. “Spirit” suggests that perhaps the future of Detroit is one which will be low tech. Nature has been taking back the city as if the ground is consuming what sprung up decades ago.”

The award is $10,000 annually renewable for four years ($40,000 total) to a Lawrence Tech program. Andrew will be taking the Integrated Design Studio offered by Lawrence Technological University at GRCC next fall. This studio is offered in conjunction with the Architectural Design Associate degree offered by GRCC. After taking the Integrated Design Studio and the completing Architectural Design Associate degree Andrew will transfer with Junior status at Lawrence Tech to complete the Master of Architecture program in Southfield.

GRCC Preschool Students Visit McCabe Marlowe House to Learn About Home Building

Field Trip 012 (Small)

Children from the GRCC Preschool Laboratory recently visited the McCabe-Marlowe House and the Architectural Design Department to help them learn more about their current study on homes. The children had the opportunity to visit the McCabe-Marlowe House on March 15th where they were given an inside and outside tour of the house, as well as a brief historical perspective of the house.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On March 16th, the children also took another field trip to the Mechanical and Architectural Design department to gain further knowledge into how homes are designed and built. They were able to look at a variety of blueprints and house models which were displayed to further enhance their understanding of homes. We wanted to offer a special thanks to both Ann Marie Birr from the Foundation and College Advancement Office and Charlotte Pease from the Mechanical and Architectural Design for their efforts for making both of these field trips possible for the children.

Hear Speaker on GRCC’s Architectural Design Partnership With Lawrence Tech 10/5/11

Glen LeRoy, dean of the College of Architecture at Lawrence Technological University will speak here on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 6:00 P.M. in the ATC Auditorium. A strong partnership, since 2010, between GRCC and LTU has made it possible for our students to obtain an Associates in Architectural Design and then transfer to Lawrence Technology University (LTU), located in Southfield, MI, to complete a Masters of Science in Architecture.

LeRoy is both an architect and urban planner and has extensive experience working in these areas throughout the U.S. and the world. He has also, taught an Allied Design Studio for Lawrence Tech in Paris, France. He is a “Fellow,” at American Institute of Architects and at American Institute of Certified Planners.

LeRoy will discuss the partnership in general and specifically the Integrated Design Studio being offered by LTU at GRCC. A student taking both the Integrated DesignStudio and the Architectural Design Associate degree can then transfer to Junior status at Lawrence Tech to complete the Master of Architecture program.
This event is free and open to the public.
