As their rounds unfolded while competing in the lead 18-hole threesome at Tuesday’s annual City Junior Golf Championship at Binder Park, Nate Brownlee and Matt Alderink sort of figured that the boys’ overall title was either one of theirs to claim.

… “Today, the way I was playing, 72 was a good round but not a great one,” said Brownlee, 18, who attended Kellogg Community College for a year and will now soon have a tryout for the Grand Rapids CC men’s golf squad.

‘On the students’ backs’: MCC board establishes tuition, fees for next year

MUSKEGON, MI — Despite protests that salary increases were being placed on the “backs of students,” the Muskegon Community College Board of Trustees on Wednesday, June 18 approved a 2014-15 budget that includes tuition and class fee increases.

… College President Dale Nesbary said the tuition increases would make MCC tuition about average among community colleges in the state. He said in-district would remain $13.50 below that of Grand Rapids Community College and $345.80 below that of Grand Valley State University.

Locals eliminated from Michigan Amateur golf

Both of Battle Creek’s golfers who made it through stroke play Monday and Tuesday at the 103rd Michigan Amateur Championship at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix, Kory Roberts and Matt Alderink were eliminated on the first day of match play Wednesday.

Roberts, 21, a 2012 Lakeview High grad who was all-state for the Spartans and who is now at Grand Rapids Community College, finished in a tie for 10th place during stroke play at 1-over-par 140 (72-68). The original field of 156 was then cut to 64 for match play.

Zack Bialik and the Grand Rapids Community College golf team finished ninth of 20 teams last week at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Terrell Clinkscales (b. June 9, 1992) is that best kind of recruit — one we stole from Nebraska late in the process.

… During his freshman year at Grand Rapids Community College, Clinkscales played the 2011 season for the Raiders prior to the college’s discontinuing the program. He saw time in six games, registering 13 tackles, including six for loss and four sacks, as he helped GRCC to finish with an 11-0 record and a No. 3 national ranking.

Golf team places 9th in national tournament

Congratulations to the GRCC Golf Team as they completed one of the best seasons in recent history with a 9th place finish at the NJCAA DivII National Golf Tournament. The Raiders had a four day total of 1231 led by Jared Multers’s 21st place finish with rounds of 74, 77, 77, 76. Jared was named to the Honorable Mention All-American Tournament Team. The Raiders concluded their spring season with a Conference Championship, MCCAA State Championship, and a 2nd place finish at the NJCAA Region XII tournament.

Muskegon Community College golfer Oliver Shepardson qualifies for NJCAA national tournament

MUSKEGON, MI — Muskegon Community College golfer Oliver Shepardson qualified for the NJCAA national tournament with a seventh-place individual finish in the two-day NJCAA Region XII Tournament that wrapped up Tuesday, May 13 in Battle Creek.

Shepardson shot 10-over for a 226 total in the three rounds of the tournament while leading his team to a fourth-place finish at Bedford Valley Golf Club behind Owens (Ohio) Community College, Grand Rapids Community College and Oakland Community College.

KCC baseball ready to make a run at regional

The Kellogg Community College baseball team recently saw its two-year reign atop the Michigan Community College Athletic Association come to an end.

… The Bruins open regional play against Grand Rapids CC (17-23, 16-10 MCCAA) today at Nichols Field, beginning at noon. The loser of that opening-round contest in the double elimination tournament will play again today at 7:30 p.m. at C.O. Brown Stadium. Play resumes Thursday at 11:30 a.m., with the championship game scheduled for Friday at noon.

Golf team heads to national tournament

Congratulations to the Raider Golfers as they finished 2nd at the Region XII Golf Tournament, qualifying the team for next week’s National Tournament at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth Indiana. The Raiders had rounds of 296/298/292, finishing four strokes behind the winning team of Owens CC and 23 strokes ahead of third place team Oakland CC. Named to the All-Region Team were Jared Multer from Battle Creek Lakeview, Cody Shoemaker from G.R. Catholic Central, and Zach Bialik from Manistee Catholic Central. Bialik was recently named Freshman of the Year.

From prison to restaurant manager: ‘McDonald’s has been really good for me’

HOLLAND, MI — Andrew Monroe considers himself lucky. At 30, he is a married father of two with a good-paying job. He’s also finishing a bachelor’s degree in operations management at Grand Valley State University.

… Within six months of going to work at McDonald’s, Monroe was promoted to assistant manager. That same year, he began taking classes at Grand Rapids Community College. Within four years, he graduated as one of the college’s top students, earning a 4.0 GPA while working more than 40 hours a week at the restaurant.

MIAA Names Penny Allen-Cook Commissioner

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the appointment of Penny Allen-Cook as the conference’s ninth commissioner.

… Prior to joining the GLIAC, Allen-Cook served as compliance and academic services coordinator for the athletic department at Saginaw Valley State University from 2005-08. She also served as head volleyball coach at Grand Rapids Community College (1994-96) and as varsity volleyball coach in the high school ranks at Pewamo-Westphalia, Jenison and Freeland. Her overall career coaching record was 494-284-38, for a winning percentage of .605.

MUSKEGON, MI — Postseason fever officially is underway for the Muskegon Community College baseball team.

… The Jayhawks open the tournament at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Vincennes University (Ind.) at Bailey Park’s Nichols Field. A win moves them along to take on the winner of Grand Rapids Community College and Kellogg Community College at noon on Thursday, while a loss pits them against the loser of GRCC vs. KCC at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Golf team wins state tournament

Congratulations to the GRCC Golf Team as they continue their great season, winning the MCCAA State Golf Tournament by 35 strokes, over second place Oakland the past two days at the Port Huron Elks Golf Club. The Raiders shot a three round total of 865, one over par, making it one of the lowest three round totals in tournament history. Leading the way for the team was sophomore Jared Multer who was the medalist of the tourney, shooting 75/70/70, edging out his own teammate David Thompson by one stroke. In addition to Multer and Thompson making the all MCCAA tournament team, were Tony Conaway, Cody Shoemaker, and Logan Sochacki. Coach Bruce Vanden Beldt was named the MCCAA Coach of the year. The team plays next Monday, Tuesday at Bedford Valley in the Region XII tournament in their bid to make it to the National Tourney.

Grandville student who died in crash was ‘finest young man I’ve ever met,’ teacher says

GRANDVILLE, MI — Roman Aguilar-Emmons, a Grandville High School senior and Kent Career Technical Center student, spent part of his Saturday picking up along 28th Street near Burlingame in Wyoming as part of a criminal justice class service project.

… Aguilar-Emmons, who worked at Meijer, planned to enroll in Grand Rapids Community College’s Police Academy in the fall. He had also applied for the one-week Grand Rapids Police Department’s High School Youth Police Academy in June.

‘Meet the Buyers’ aimed at introducing business owners to government buyers

GRCC shifts repair money, cuts funding for diversity programs to plug budget deficit

Davenport’s Murphy, Bender, Tidey highlight All-WHAC awards ceremony

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Ten members of Davenport’s baseball team were selected to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference’s postseason awards with three winning three of its four individual awards, the league announced Monday. As voted by the WHAC head coaches, sophomore right-hander Corey Murphy was tabbed the pitcher of the year, junior two-way player Brendan Bender was selected newcomer of the year and Kevin Tidey was voted by his colleagues as coach of the year.

… A transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, Bender has started all but one of his 51 appearances as a position player and five of his seven games were started on the mound. As a first baseman, Bender finished third in the WHAC in batting average (.387) with a team leading 14 doubles and 48 RBI. He also hit a pair of triples and home runs each while drawing 34 walks to bump the on-base percentage to a league second best .498. As a pitcher, the southpaw is 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA.

Golf: Skippers in 7th following 36 holes at Elks

PORT HURON TWP. — After more than eight hours straight on his feet and 36 holes of golf, Joey Falk was thinking about more than just his score.

… Grand Rapids, with an even par 576, is running away from the rest of the field. Oakland is second with a 606. GRCC was led by David Thompson, who shot a two-under-par 142 and leads the tournament. Hes one of four Raiders in the top five.

Golf team wins conference championship

Congratulations to the GRCC Raider Golf Team as they captured their 6th consecutive Western Conference Championship on Friday. The Raiders posted a four round score of 1187 outdistancing second place Muskegon CC by 75 strokes. The team posted a 282, six under par, in the last round of the tournament, one of the lowest rounds in team history. Also congratulations to Jared Multer, a sophomore from Battle Creek Lakeview, who was the Tournament Medalist. All six members of the team were All Conference, including Multer, Tony Conaway, Cody Shoemaker, David Thompson, Logan Sochacki, and Zach Bialik. The team is in Port Huron today and tomorrow competing in the State Conference Tournament.

Raider golfers win second tournament in one week

Congratulations to the GRCC Raider Golf Team as they won their second consecutive tournament, the Jackson Invite, in less than a week as they posted a great score of 289. Also congratulations to Jared Multer, a sophomore from Battle Creek Lakeview, who was Medalist of the tourney shooting an outstanding 68.  The five time Western Conference Champions will be attempting to defend their title this Friday at the 36 hole Swan Lake Resort Western Conference tournament.

Students turn lens on manufacturing

An annual high school student video competition aims to promote interest in the manufacturing industry.

… Videos submitted to Discover Manufacturing Today were posted on the video competition’s Facebook page and open to public voting. Student videos were also reviewed by a panel of judges, and were ranked based on a variety of criteria including creativity of the video, and how well the interview questions were addressed. The judging panel consisted of representatives from local manufacturers, Grand Rapids Community College, The Right Place, Kent ISD and Michigan Works.

College notes: Jenison grad throws back-to-back no-hitters, will play baseball at Indiana next year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Every athlete wants to be known for something.

… Wes Vaughn (baseball), Grand Rapids Community College: Vaughn was 3-for-3 with two doubles in an 11-1 win over Glen Oaks CC on April 10. Vaughn (East Grand Rapids), a sophomore outfielder, is hitting .326. It was the third-straight game he had three hits.

Garrett Veihl (baseball), Grand Rapids Community College: The freshman pitcher (Greenville) earned his first win of the season pitching a complete game, 4-1 win over Glen Oaks CC on April 10. In five innings, he allowed four hits and one earned run with no walks and five strikeouts. Veihl improves to 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA.

Dylan VanPutten (baseball), Grand Rapids Community College: The sophomore (Middleville) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a double in a 9-8 loss to Macomb Community College on April 12. The first baseman is hitting .240 this season.

… Katie Klomstra (softball), Grand Rapids Community College: The sophomore (Godwin Heights) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in a 5-3 loss to Lansing CC on April 12.

… Logan Sochacki (golf), Grand Rapids Community College: Sochacki (Jenison) earned medalist honors after shooting a 71 at the Ancilla College Invitational in Plymouth, Ind. on April 12. Teammates Cody Shoemaker and Tony Conaway were tied for third place with 73s to help the Raiders finish first.

Brad Buurstra homers twice as Union baseball team takes two from Muskegon Mona Shores

Two players named Buurstra were responsible for a lot of on-field damage as Grand Rapids Union took two games from Muskegon Mona Shores, 5-4 and 6-2, in OK Black Conference play on Thursday.

… Brad Buurstra has signed with Grand Rapids Community College. Devin Husted, who had two hits and two runs batted in during the doubleheader, is also getting recruited by schools.

Raiders win Ancilla Invite

Congratulations to the 5th ranked GRCC Raider Golf Team as they shot a 289, one over par, to win the Ancilla Invite. Leading the way for the Raiders were a pair of freshmen, Logan Sochacki from Jenison with a 71, and Zach Bialik from Manistee Catholic Central with a 72. This was Logan’s first time in the line-up and he was Medalist for the tournament. The team is back in action next Monday at the Jackson Invite.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — MLive Grand Rapids Press education reporters Monica Scott and Brian McVicar landed an honor in a national competition for their series that exposed high rates of students needing remediation in college. The series also put a spotlight on local efforts to address the problem.

Hope rewind: Flying Dutchmen golf wins at Quail Ridge

Holland, Mich. — The Hope men’s golf team took first at the five-team Furniture City Classic at Quail Ridge on Tuesday. Hope’s Ben Lanting led the way to finish first after shooting a 69. Evan Telzerow and Winton Munch finished tied for fourth with 75s.
The Flying Dutchmen shot 295 as a team. Grand Rapids Community College was second (302), Calvin College was third (317) and Aquinas (336) and Davenport (350) rounded out the field.

College notes: Tyler Baar a big hit on baseball field and classroom at Toledo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Tyler Baar may have been born to play baseball.

…DeMarcus Stuckey, Grand Rapids Community College: The freshman point guard (GR Catholic Central) was recognized on March 14 by being named to the All-Region XII team, All-MCCAA team, All-Western Conference team and Western Conference All-Freshman team. He had team high 14.5 points and 3.7 assists per game average shooting 47.7% from the field.

Goose Pond Colony Resort and Golf Club will host 13 golf teams from universities and community colleges across the nation at its 13th Annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling Golf Tournament, which will begin today and run through Saturday, March 22.

…The 13 participating schools include Andrews College, Darton State College, Faulkner State Community College, Georgia Military, Grand Rapids Community College, Illinois Central College, John A. Logan College, Kaskaskia College, Mineral Area College, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mott Community College, Rend Lake College and Vincennes University.
