Fire drills to take place across campus on October 24

Campus Police and Facilities will be conducting fire drills on campus Friday, Oct 24th beginning at approximately 9 a.m.. We will begin on main campus and move through all our buildings. There is no specific time for arrival at any building. These are State mandated drills requiring a full evacuation of the building. We would appreciate everyone’s cooperation. The sooner we can evacuate the building the sooner we can get everyone back to their normal activities.

Fire drills planned for March 1

As required by the State Fire Code, GRCC Campus Police and Facilities personnel will conduct fire drills on Saturday March 1st beginning by 7am. We are aware of several events taking place on campus this weekend and will do our best to be in and out of the buildings before those get started. However, everyone present in the buildings will need to evacuate when the alarms are activated. If you have something going on that you would like Campus Police to be aware of please advise Chief Whitman by Friday, February 28th.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s cooperation.

Fire drills scheduled for November 1

In our continuing effort to maintain compliance with the State Fire Code, we will be conducting our next monthly fire drill on Friday, November 1st.  The drills will begin shortly after 6:30 a.m.  Campus Police and Facilities personnel will activate the alarms in 3-4 buildings at a time. All persons in the buildings when the alarm sounds will need to evacuate.  Once we confirm everyone is out, the alarm will be reset and people will be allowed back inside.  We are doing the drills early in the morning in an effort to reduce interruption to normal business activities.  We WILL NOT be conducting a drill in the Main and Cook buildings as we have had two activations and evacuations in the last week so there is no need to do it again.

The schedule will be as follows (within a few minutes either way):  Calkins Science, Ford Fieldhouse, Student Center @ 0630; CPP, Music, LRC, ATC, Spectrum @ 0645; Sneden/White, Admin, Mable/Engle @ 0715.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Chief Whitman or Lt. Merlo prior to that morning.

Update on fire alarm testing

In reference to this morning’s fire alarm in Main/Cook: There was an inspection of the fire suppression system scheduled this morning (Oct. 24) with the State Fire Marshall for the Art Gallery on 4 Main. This was supposed to be a very short and contained test; however, the contractor that was sent to activate it was not as familiar with the system as those sent in the past, and he accidentally activated the entire system. We apologize for the inconvenience; the situation was resolved as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Fire drill scheduled for September 8

Campus Police and our facilities department will be conducting our first campus-wide fire drills for this academic year on Sunday, September 8th. The drill will be conducted one building at a time and will begin shortly after noon. If you are in a building when the fire alarm is activated, you are expected to evacuate. We will be documenting the time of the drill and the length of time it takes to clear the building.

The State Fire code requires colleges to conduct 8 fire drills a year. We will send out similar notices a few days prior to each drill. If you have any questions please contact Chief Whitman or Lt. Merlo.

Fire Alarm Testing in ATC on 9/5/12

The State Fire Marshal will be on site Wednesday Sept. 5th for inspection of the new Secchia Teaching Kitchen in the ATC building. The inspection is scheduled for 1:00 pm but there will need to flexibility to allow systems to be tested when the inspector arrives. The test will involve activating the alarm/strobe system, if the alarm sounds for more than several minutes consider it to be a real alarm and evacuate the building.

Fire Drills Scheduled for 10/6/11

On Thursday 10/6, (weather permitting) GRCC will practice fire drills on the main campus and at the Tassell M-TEC.

We will be timed on evacuation of the buildings and checked for doors left opened. Take a moment to plan your best evacuation route. Please assist in moving students out and away from the buildings.

These drills are in anticipation of the unannounced visit held by the Grand Rapid Rapids Fire department each fall.
