GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Grand Rapids man is accused of using others’ identities to obtain $150,000 in fraudulent student loans and Pell Grants.
… He enrolled online at Grand Rapids Community College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Texas Southern University. He then sought student loans and grants.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – Brandon Kenon Rogers, 31, is facing student loan and grant fraud charges after defrauding the U.S. Department of Education of approximately $150,000 in a wire fraud scheme. Rogers is also charged with identity theft as a part of the scheme.
… According to the Department of Justice, Rogers used others’ identities and posed as them when applying for student loans and Pell Grants in their names. He also enrolled in local community colleges, including Grand Rapids Community College and Kalamazoo Valley Community College using those identities.

Change Ups: King Media earns first place standing

President and founder of King Media, Coleen King, won first place in the PR News Agency Elite Awards in the category of Digital/Social. The agency received the award for work performed for Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant. In 2016, King Media planned a multichannel campaign to help Tabor Hill earn a spot in the USA Today 10Best American Winery Restaurant competition. King Media’s social media campaign enabled Tabor Hill Winery to climb from 16th place to fourth place, earning top 10 honors.
… Grand Rapids Community College recently graduated 11 people from its new training program for corrections officers.

U.S. Green Building Council Announces LEED Homes Award Winners

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the recipients of its annual LEED Homes Awards, which recognizes projects, architects, developers and homebuilders who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation in the residential green building marketplace.
… In 2016 Kent County’s Habitat for Humanity chapter built 15 homes earning LEED certification 10 receiving Gold and five Silver. To date, Habitat Kent has built 158 LEED-certified homes. On average, Habitat Kent’s LEED certified homes save homeowner’s $67.12 per month over an average Michigan home. Habitat Kent also partners with Grand Rapids Public School and Grand Rapids Community College to provide professional green construction experience to the next generation workforce.

Should community colleges drop the word ‘community’ from their name?

GRAND RAPIDS, MI –Does “community” in a community college name have negative connotations?

With the passage of legislation allowing community colleges to grant four-year degrees in some areas, at least one school in Michigan — Jackson Community College — is considering dropping the word community from its name.

… But it’s not a strategy administrators at Grand Rapids Community College are considering, said college spokeswoman Kathy Mullins.

“It’s not a conversation we’re planning on having,” Mullins said.

Grand Rapids Film Festival announces venue details, free outdoor movie screening

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Film Festival organizers have announced a few more details about the recently revamped five-day event, which will take place in downtown Grand Rapids on May 15-19, 2013.

… Movies will be shown at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts and Grand Valley State University’s downtown campus. Kendall College of Art and Design and the Compass College of Cinematic Arts will host workshops. The Producer’s Brunch will take place at Grand Rapids Community College on May 17.

Season ends for GRCC men’s basketball team after second straight loss in national tournament

DANVILLE, Ill. — The Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team entered the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament intending to make a deep run.

Instead, the Raiders are headed home after suffering their second straight loss.

 

GRCC Today – 2010 in Stats

WordPress, the blogging platform GRCC’s Communications Department uses to publish GRCC Today provides a year-end report for the department to use in managing the blog.  Here are some of the interesting stats we’ll be using to guide the content and approach of the blog for 2011:

  • The GRCC Today blog was viewed 160,000 times in 2010.
  • The Communications Department published 1,486 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 2,134 posts.
  • The blog’s busiest day of the year was December 14th with1,043 views. The most popular post that day was “To all Employees who Participate in the Michigan Public Schools Retirement System (MPSERS)”
  • The top sites that referred traffic to GRCC Today in 2010 were grcc.edu, mail.grcc.edu, en.wordpress.com, netvibes.com, and facebook.com.
  • When visitors searched the site in 2010, the top search terms were grcc football, grcc police academy, cindy kennell, and grand rapids community college football.

Media and Guests Invited to Attend and Tour Newly Renovated Campus

August 16, 2010 GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Guests and media representatives are invited to a special reception and tour of Grand Rapids Community College’s newly renovated Fulton Street Campus on Wednesday, August 25 between 4 and 5:30 PM.

At 4:20 PM the GRCC Foundation GRCC Works Ask Anyone! Campaign will make a major announcement regarding the campus. Reception and tours will immediately follow. The announcement will be made in front of the Cook Administration Building, 415 E. Fulton SE.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for nearly 30,000 students annually in degree courses, certification & training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes.
