About 23 students in the occupational therapy assistant program recently shared ergonomic recommendations with GRCC dental students.
“To apply information about ergonomic interventions learned in class, the OTA students observed the dental students at work in the dental clinic,” said Lynda Jansen, of Workforce Development. “The OTA students hoped to provide some valuable instruction to help the dental students prevent work-related injuries throughout their careers.”
Christine Dobberstein, a faculty member with the dental program, said her students learned a lot in last week’s presentation.
“They did a fantastic job of gathering pertinent information for our students,” she said. “Our students recognized many of the risk factors the OTA group outlined and have set some personal goals around the recommendations.”
Both Dobberstein and Jansen said they hope to continue the collaboration between their departments.

Evan Macklin, of Student Life, is sending a Raider Salute to first-year Dental Program students:
They chipped in their own money to provide a fellow student with a better holiday. The Dental Program wanted to adopt a family for the holidays, so they asked a student to provide wish lists for themselves and their dependents (if they had any).
The student was in complete shock. The day before I called her, she had told her kids that the gifts were going to be very limited this year due to a financial set back in her life recently. When I gave her a call, she was in disbelief. She indicated the phone call couldn’t have came at a better time for her and her family.
The student indicated that she hopes to be in a better financial situation later in life, so that she can give back as well.
From Amy Koning:
A big Raider Salute to the entire Dental Department for the development of a schedule that will address the clinic shutdown this summer as well as the ability to staff the sections. Your innovative, collaborative problem solving is a testament to your devotion to your students!
