GRCC plans to expand online courses, improve quality

Grand Rapids Community College plans to expand and strengthen the quality of online courses, according to GRCC Provost Laurie Chesley.
“We have made very conscientious efforts to have high level, quality online courses and to make sure that faculty and students are well prepared to be successful, and we are continuing those efforts,” she said.
Michigan Colleges Online makes available courses from 28 schools
GRCC students can take online courses at any of the state’s 28 community colleges through a new initiative of the Michigan Community College Association.
MCCA’s Michigan Colleges Online program greatly expands students’ online learning options. Students can receive support services from their home college, with no interruption in financial aid, and all credits earned Michigan Colleges Online transfer back to the their home college.

9th Annual Summer Teaching Institute
Next week, The Center for Teaching Excellence and Distance Learning & Instructional Technologies will be hosting The 9th Annual Summer Teaching Institute. Over the course of three days, there will be seven workshops available for faculty to attend as they gear up for the fall semester, and one lucky participant will win a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920.

Distance learning offers convenience, but it’s not for everyone

There is little debate that the Internet has acted as a disruptive force for a broad range of industries, higher education included.
Like many higher education institutions around the country, West Michigan organizations such as Grand Valley State University, Calvin College and Grand Rapids Community College have begun to offer distance learning classes where students don’t need to be in a classroom. Rather, they simply need a computer with an Internet connection.
$335 million: Higher ed building projects turn to other sources of capital as state funding wanes

The next year and a half is shaping up to be a busy period for higher education building projects.
… At Grand Rapids Community College, the majority of the school’s $35.3 million in capital projects are for the renovation and modernization of existing facilities. Almost every project includes upgrades to HVAC, lighting and electric services as well as exterior wall and window replacements.
The largest of the college’s ongoing projects is an approximately $15.7 million renovation of the Cook Academic Hall. This project, funded in part through a state of Michigan capital outlay, is a complete renovation, creating state-of-the-art learning spaces for nursing and allied health programs and general purpose classrooms for math, English and business.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) — Jose Sanchez Bueso had a long journey before he could graduate from Wyoming High School. At the age of 15, alone, he left Honduras and journeyed to Guatemala and Mexico before finally getting to Michigan. Jose says it was a struggle because he came here not knowing any English.
He says his best advice is to tell people not to give up, you can’t get anywhere if you give up. Jose’s next step is to go to GRCC, he hopes to become a mechanical engineer.
Saranac Promise really does make a dent

Georgia Highlands College Names New President

Donald J. Green, vice president for Extended and International Operations, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Mich. has been named as the next president of Georgia Highlands College in Rome by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Green will assume his new post on Sept. 8, 2014.
… His higher education career also includes administrative and teaching posts at Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Davenport University, Grand Rapids, Mich. Green also operated a consulting firm, D. Green and Associates.

… The Jayhawks lost to Grand Rapids Community College, 80-56, on Jan. 15. Anderson led MCC with nine points and 11 rebounds. Turean Conner had 13 points.

GRCC Using Google Glass as Teaching Tool

Google’s technologically-advanced eyewear, Google Glass, is shaping programs at universities and colleges around the country, including in West Michigan.
Grand Rapids Community College is now part of the Google Glass Explorer program and is using the device as a teaching tool.

BIG RAPIDS, MI – Ferris State University wants to know if there’s anything it can do to provide a more welcoming, inclusive environment for its diverse student body, and administrators are turning to a consultant can help them find an answer.

Google Glass Added to GRCC Digital Initiative
One of the goals of the GRCC Digital Initiative is “to provide faculty and students with access to emerging and innovative technological resources that extend, improve, and enhance teaching and learning.” To that end, DLIT has joined the Google Glass Explorer program.
Go to http://www.grcc.edu/googleglass to see resources and communications about the progress of the project. DLIT is currently field testing the device and considering how the augmented reality functions and growing number of apps can benefit teaching and learning at GRCC.
Don’t be surprised if you see one of us wearing Google Glass at an upcoming event. If you do spot us, don’t be shy. We would love to let you try them on and see what they can do!
