The Diversity Learning Center is pleased to collaborate with the English Department in providing opportunities to engage with Diversity lecture Series Speaker, Dr. Elaine Richardson.

Professor in the department of Education and Human Ecology, Dr. Elaine Richardson aka “Dr. E” is a multidimensional personality: professor, performer, author and mentor are just a few of the ways she gives back and gives thanks. Her message is empowerment through education, and knowledge of self and history. Her motto: “Ignorance, low self-esteem and shame are killers. When you know who you are, nobody can control you.”

Journalist to speak about bullying for GRCC’s Diversity Lecture Series

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Emily Bazelon, a senior editor at Slate Magazine, will speak Wednesday at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE, about bullying and its impact on children.

Bazelon, appearing as part of GRCC’s Diversity Lecture Series, will begin her lecture at 7 p.m. Her discussion is titled after her latest book, “Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy.

Restaurant Week 2013: More than 17,000 meals raise $17,000 for culinary scholarship fund

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The numbers are in: 17,135 meals were consumed during Restaurant Week Grand Rapids 2013.

That means a $17,135 check was presented to the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education for its Scholarship Fund as each of the restaurants donated $1 from each meal sold during the promotion.

KVCC volleyball team heads to state finals

KALAMAZOO, MI — The Kalamazoo Valley Community College volleyball team will compete in the MCCAA State Finals this weekend in Jackson.

… A recent notable victory was when the Cougars beat the Grand Rapids Community College team on their own home court, something that hadn’t happened in three years.

 

Diversity Lecture Series Presents Douglas Rushkoff

Douglas Rushkoff – author, media theorist and lecturer – will present “Digital Nation” November 13, 2012, in the next Diversity Lecture.

Douglas Rushkoff, Ph.D. is a graphic novelist and globally recognized media and technology theorist specializing in new media and internet culture. He originated several ideas ranging from “viral media” to “social currency” with insight on how interactive communications affect our society as we create, share, and influence each other’s values.  Rushkoff is a CNN commentator, author of 12 books, including the Gen-X Reader, Screenagers, Life Inc.: How Corporatism Conquered the World, and How We Can Take It Back. He is best known for his association with the early cyberpunk culture, and his advocacy of open source solutions to social problems.
