Upcoming Fake News Events/Speakers at the GRCC Library

Our Campus Common Reading committee has been hard at work creating events for the Fall and Winter semesters on Fake News.  Here are two events coming up in the next several weeks that you and our students may be interested in attending:

  1. Movie Showing of “War of the Worlds” (2005 version) in the ATC Theater on Monday, October 30 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.  Admission to the movie is free and we’ll have complimentary refreshments.  What’s unique about this showing is that we’ll have a side-bar screen displaying fun facts, trivia, and comments from our viewers.  The movie is PG-13; so families are welcome to attend.
  2. Author Lecture and Book Signing by A. Brad Schwartz discussing his book: “Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News” on Thursday, November 2 from 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m.  The program will be held in the Library and Learning Commons (second floor).  Faculty, we would love for your class to join us, so please notify Brian Beecher (Director of the Library & Learning Commons) so that accommodations can be made.   The library has complimentary copies of this book available to current students, faculty and staff (while supplies last).

This series on Fake News will continue throughout the Winter semester (dates are yet to be determined) and will include the following events:

  1. Panel Discussion on Fake News and its effect on journalism and journalists.
  2. Presentation on Fake News from the library’s perspective.
  3. Author Skype visit from Paul Levinson discussing his book: “Fake News in Real Context”.  The library will make complimentary copies available of Paul’s book in the Winter semester (again, while supplies last).

We look forward to participating in these events with you and our students.  Please let our committee know if you have any questions.
