… About the artist: I am a pianist living and working in Grand Rapids as a piano teacher, currently going to school at Grand Rapids Community College and hoping to transfer to the University of Michigan for a master’s degree in piano. I have never had art lessons, and this is my first large oil painting.

Michigan’s 1st fashion incubator boosts state’s clothing and accessory designers

LANSING, MI — Michigan’s first incubator devoted solely to fashion design will give budding clothing and accessory designers a shot at developing a collection and taking it to production.

… Higher education institutions including Michigan State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University and Lansing Community College have fashion programs. But (Jeff) Henry said no single school had access to all of this equipment. Some are working on non-industrial home sewing machines, and others use large printers instead of the plotter for patterns. The software they use also may not be as robust, he said.

Paying for college with a credit card rings up extra fees

Paying for one’s college tuition by going online and using a credit card sounds super convenient. But it’s also a really easy way to get hit with hundreds of dollars in extra fees.

… At the other extreme, many community colleges including Macomb County Community College, Wayne County Community College and Grand Rapids Community College do not have an extra fee for using a credit card to pay tuition.

Greenwich Village Art Fair Scheduled for September

ROCKFORD (WIFR) — The 66th Greenwich Village Art Fair takes place Sept. 1314, rain or shine, on the grounds of Rockford Art Museum at Riverfront Museum Park, 711 North Main Street in downtown Rockford, Illinois. Gates are open 10 a.m.6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.5 p.m. Sunday. Admission at the gate is $5 for adults, free for children 12 and younger. Advance tickets are $3 and are available at Alpine Bank location and RAM Store. All proceeds support Rockford Art Museum programs throughout the year.

… More than 150 artists from across the nation will exhibit at this year’s fair. Types of artwork represented include paintings, jewelry, sculpture, glass, ceramics, textiles, photography, wood, mixed media and more. Artists compete for awards on the first day of the fair, where their work will be viewed by 2014 Judge Juan Fernandez, a working artist based in the Chicago suburbs and photography professor at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan who previously taught at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

… The Silver Line equates to roughly $3.5 million to $4 million per mile of investment, Venema said. Grand Rapids’ Downtown Market, Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, Grand Rapids Community College and many more housing developments and eateries lie on the route’s northern end and the hope is that the growth spreads southward.

A typical highly-touted college football recruit hopes to see the field as soon as they arrive on campus, but that doesn’t always happen.

… While Wilson is entering his true sophomore season, the other three players Meyer singled out all redshirted last year. Marshall is a redshirt-freshman, (Corey) Smith is a redshirt-junior after transferring from Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan before last season and Thomas is a redshirt-sophomore who played as a true freshman in 2012 before sitting out last year.

Fashion and Interior Design students go nautical in Festival of Trees

Fashion and Interior Design students have created a nautical-inspired holiday scene for their entry in the 2012 Festival of Trees at the Muskegon Museum of Art.

This year’s theme is “Holiday Tide,” and the students’ creation evokes the breeze and ease of being at the lake while capturing the holiday spirit.

The festival, which also includes a gift market and music, runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays from November 23 to December 2 at the museum, 296 W. Webster Ave. in Muskegon. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for museum members, $3 for ages 3 to 17 and $14 for an all-festival pass. Details: (231) 720-2570.
