GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Classes have been canceled for thousands of local college students Tuesday, Nov. 18, because of severe winter weather, including students at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University.

Enrollment falling at community colleges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Several four-year Michigan universities have seen slow and steady enrollment increases, while community colleges have seen a steady decline in recent years.

… “We anticipated a decline,” said Tina Hoxie, Grand Rapids Community College assistant provost and dean for student affairs. “We’ve had record years for almost ten years where we’ve had record enrollment at the community college. Our enrollment can be very tied to the economy.”

… In November 2013, Michigan received about $26.4 million in Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant program funding to support skills training in advanced manufacturing skills at community colleges and other public institutions across the state. Among the colleges receiving this funding are Macomb Community College, Bay College, Grand Rapids Community College, Kellogg Community College, Lake Michigan College, Lansing Community College, Mott Community College, Schoolcraft College and Baker College.

The University of Minnesota Duluth opens its 2014 campaign with four matches in three days at the Michigan Technical University Keewenaw Classic beginning with a match against a long-time rival receiving votes in the initial American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll.

… Also graduating was the team’s starting setter, and duties will fall on a new addition as the team adds a pair of freshmen and Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College junior transfer Stacy Kalsbeek.

GRCC spends $55,000 on search firm to find new provost

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Community College has hired AGB Search, a Washington D.C.-based consulting group, to search for the college’s new provost.

Restaurant Week GR returns with ‘Perfect Pairings’ theme and local dining deals

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Summer in West Michigan means the return of Restaurant Week Grand Rapids and the chance to sample cuisine made from fresh, local ingredients over the 12-day food festival.

… One dollar from every meal sold during the 2014 event will be donated by each of the restaurants to a student scholarship fund at the highly acclaimed Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College. Since 2010, Restaurant Week Grand Rapids participating restaurants have donated almost $75,000 to the fund.

Allendale quarterback leads Legends team to victory in Muskegon All-Star Classic

MUSKEGON, MI — Allendale’s Haiden Majewski got a chance to showcase his football skills in the Muskegon area Saturday night.

… Majewski broke his ankle in Allendale’s first playoff game last fall and was happy to get the chance to play again. He’s going to Grand Rapids Community College to play baseball.

Raider Salute to Dominic Dorsey, Don VanOeveren

This Raider Salute goes to Dominic Dorsey, director of accessibility, and Don VanOeveren, of the Computer Information Systems Department, for their significant donations to the Student Food Pantry.

Just as a reminder: The Office of Student Life and Conduct is always accepting donations for the pantry. While the number of students served in the summer is lower than fall and winter, there are still many who need our help. Please consider picking up a few items on your next grocery shopping trip. It can be one, two or 50 items — it all helps!
