Reminder Active Commute Week – Next Week

Staff Development is encouraging staff and students to participate in Active Commute Week – leave the car at home and Ride the Rapid, bike, roller blade or long board into GRCC! The Active Commute Week Challenge is a weeklong competition for businesses and individuals in Greater Grand Rapids from Monday, May 14 to Friday, May 18 at noon.

Challenge participants include: Amway, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Grand Valley State University, Meijer, Metro Health, Priority Health, Steelcase, and West Michigan Bike and Fitness.

Commuters track online how often they commute to and from work using active transportation:

  • cycling
  • walking (including running, wheelchair, skating, boarding)
  • riding the bus
  • carpooling and vanpooling

Please join us in the Multi-Purpose Room (Room 108) in Sneden Hall on Tuesday May 15, 2012 from 10:30AM-12:00 PM. No pre-registration necessary. Officer Tony Myers will teach basic bike safety to keep you safe on the roads while commuting to work!

Smoothie Class 11/8/11

Join Raw Food Freelancer Jennifer Pohlman for 1 hour of deliciousness. Here you will learn how to make green and fruit smoothies – all dairy/gluten free and nutrient dense! You will leave this class feeling refreshed, cleansed and smoothie smart!

Raw Food Detox Class 10/27/11

Are you curious about nutrient rich raw foods that can assist with detoxing and cleansing? These are brief periods of time where we give our body a break and allow toxins and metabolic waste to be eliminated from the body. During these times we also can make connections between what our body needs and wants due to food cravings and addictions. On Thursday October 27 at 10:00-11:30 Jennifer Pohlman discusses these things in a Raw Food Detox class.  Sign up here.

Staff Development Wellness and Enrichment – Ruth Bell Olsson on Dispelling the Myths of HIV-AIDS

According to the CDC – 7,218 people in Michigan are living with AIDS, and 490,696 total in the United States. On October 18 from 10am-12pm, come join in the conversation lead by Ruth Bell Olsson of the Grand Rapids Red Project “What every college employee needs to know about dispelling the myths of HIV/AIDS”. Raw Foods 101

Are you curious about raw foods? Do you hear these buzz words and wonder what they are really all about? Join Raw Food Freelancer Jennifer Pohlman for this 2 hour culinary experience on October 11th. Here you will learn the benefits of a raw food lifestyle, food prep tips, demonstrations and sampling galore! When you eat a diet of mainly raw foods you are freed from calorie counting, protein worries and carbohydrate overload. Let nature do it’s job – eat smart, eat raw!
