GRCC readies to tap into craft beer industry with new certificate program

Every vibrant city needs a great school to train the next generation of leaders and innovators. Beer City is no different.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has awarded a $2.9 million grant that will allow Grand Rapids Community College to purchase equipment for its machine tool, welding, HVAC, and automotive programs — as well as a new craft beer program.

Local pro football hopefuls prepare for tryouts in Chicago and at Grand Valley State

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Area college football players looking to impress and land a job – maybe not in the NFL, but somewhere as a pro – will be involved in upcoming pro camps.

… Two others are scheduled to perform at the Chicago combine in Corey Stone, a defensive lineman from Ferris State and former member of Grand Rapids Community College team, and running back Bronson Hill, a Grand Rapids Catholic Central grad from Eastern Michigan.

The Chipola baseball team puts its nine-game winning streak on the line when they head to No. 2 state ranked State College of Florida for a three-game set this weekend.

No. 4 state ranked Chipola (17-5) is coming off a five-game sweep at home vs. Grand Rapids and Alabama Southern. Chipola plays State College of Florida (18-4) on Friday at 5 p.m. then a doubleheader (12/2:30 p.m.) on Saturday in Manatee-Sarasota.

MEDC approves $50 million grant to Michigan community colleges

The state of Michigan recently approved a grant to aid community colleges in purchasing equipment and training for students studying skilled trades. Approximately $14.3 million of the states $50 million grant program, coined the Community College Skilled Trades Equipment Program (CCSTEP), was distributed to institutions in West Michigan.

Grand Rapids Community College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Kellogg Community College, Montcalm Community College, Muskegon Community College and West Shore Community College were among the recipients of the grant.

… College students shared their experiences about the transition from high school. Isaiah Townsend, a 2014 Ottawa Hills High School grad now attending GRCC, described how he was scared of failing. He said he benefited from mentors who convinced him college was for him.

Meijer Scholar Athlete, Chase Huntey

This week’s Meijer Scholar Athlete is Chase Huntey, a senior from Morley Stanwood High School, with a 3.96 GPA. Huntey, has been named All-Conference twice, in football, baseball and basketball. His future is on the diamond, where he’ll play and go to Grand Rapids Community College.

GRCC offers niche program in industrial sewing

Specialized industries in West Michigan often run into the same training and talent constraints as high-growth sectors such as the automotive supply chain.

… That’s according to Julie Parks, director of workforce training at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). To fill the talent gap for manufacturers in the region, GRCC recently launched its industrial sewing course in December 2014.

Iron Chef Cheese competition benefits Make-A-Wish

Yesterday, Chef Bob Schultz and his students partnered with Make-A-Wish Michigan for the Iron Chef Cheese Competition. The event raised over $600 for Make-A-Wish Michigan by selling the opportunity to judge the cheese competition. Each team had a local wish kid participate in the preparation of the delicious food using various cheeses and a secret ingredient: root vegetables! Everyone was a winner! The food was fabulous and everyone had fun!

Medical assistant students go through pinning ceremony

Job Training Medical Assistant students celebrated their program completion with a pinning ceremony Monday evening, Feb 9, 2015. All are pursuing employment offers and are in the hiring process. Provost Laurie Chesley, Dean Fiona Hert, Program Director Linda Witte, and the instructional team spoke to the graduates.

This was the first class to follow the Job Training format which lead to the program being qualified to award Financial Aid. It was the first ceremony to take place at the Tassell M-TEC (others had been done in the Science Bldg auditorium).

Snyder touts career tech education in GR stop

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — There are thousands of well-paying jobs available in Michigan right now, according to Gov. Rick Snyder. The problem, he says, is not enough people with the skills to fill them.

… Dayna Frownfelder, a welding student in at the Grand Rapids Community College M-Tech program, wishes she had known about what was available beyond a four-year degree when she was a high school student preparing for the future.

‘The Poetry of Love’

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra series of Sunday recitals will present Libor Ondras and friends in a program titled The Poetry of Love at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

… Pianist Sheryl Lott is a frequent solo and collaborative performer, and is currently on the piano faculties of the Interlochen Arts Camp and Grand Rapids Community College. She has performed most recently on a tour of the British Isles with Big Rapids-based womens choir Voca Lyrica, and is working on a series of recitals and a CD with the Aries Trio. She collaborates in performance frequently with many members of the Grand Rapids Symphony and Grand Valley State University faculty and Libor Ondras. She has studied with Ralph Votapek, Ian Hobson, Albertine Votapek, and Joseph Evans, and received her DMA from Michigan State University in 2005.

Muskegon Community College sports recap: Women’s basketball extends streak, men’s basketball in first place

MUSKEGON, MI – After seeing its season-high, six-game winning streak snapped last week, the Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team bounced back with a decisive 87-78 victory over Lake Michigan College on Friday, Jan. 30.

… Following three games last week, the Jayhawks only have two this week – but they’re both on the road. MCC plays Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Friday, Feb. 6 against Grand Rapids Community College.

Former Grand Haven man goes missing in Grand Rapids

Timothy Groenhout, a graduate of Grand Haven High School in the early 1990s, was last seen in downtown Grand Rapids at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21.

… Tim graduated from the Culinary Arts School at Grand Rapids Community College, worked as a chef in downtown Grand Rapids and then headed to Seattle to also work as a chef. He recently moved back to Grand Rapids from Washington, and was living with his girlfriend and looking for a job.

… Michael Miller, Grand Rapids Community College: Miller (Caledonia/Grace Bible) had a season-high 21 points against Lansing CC on Jan. 21. He drained five 3-pointers and is averaging 8.9 points per game.

DeMarcus Stuckey, Grand Rapids Community College: Stuckey (GR Catholic Central) had back-to-back 27-point games against Jackson CC and Lansing CC last week. Stuckey leads the Raiders (10-7) in scoring with 21.3 points per game.

… WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

… Jayla Branch, Grand Rapids Community College: Branch has become a dominant scorer for the Raiders. The freshman guard (Wyoming) had 31 points in a 66-61 loss to Glen Oaks CC on Jan. 21. She was 10-of-26 from the field and drained six 3-pointers. She is averaging 14.6 points per game.

Area high school grads making an impact on college sports scene

Following is a look at some area high school graduates who have been making news both in the winter season on the collegiate level.

… Jayla Branch is making a big impact with the Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team. A freshman from Wyoming High School, Branch is second on the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game and leads the team in steals with 3.6 per game. Branch is also averaging 2.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Branch scored a season-best 31 points in a game against Glen Oaks Community College and recorded seven steals against Schoolcraft.

Ferris States Tony Annese has interviewed for CMU head coach job, still on radar

Multiple sources this week have confirmed Ferris State head coach Tony Annese has interviewed for the open head coach job at Central Michigan.

… Annese proceeded to take over a program at Grand Rapids Community College that had gone a combined 7-11 the previous two seasons.
