Two Students Awarded with the GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship

The GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship was created by the employees of the college in honor of GRCC’s 100th year celebration. Currently, two awards are given each year: one to an incoming student and the other to a returning student that has earned at least 12 credits at GRCC. These scholarships are awarded based on scholastic achievement as well as extracurricular involvement and community service. Applicants are also asked to submit a short essay explaining why they feel they deserve the scholarship. The recipients are then selected by a cross-college committee made up of representatives from each of the various employee groups (Faculty, Meet & Confer, CEBA, APSS, and Campus Police).

We are pleased to announce and congratulate the 2018-19 scholarship recipients for the GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship: Carley Hume and Rodney Van Lagen. Both have been awarded $1,000! Rodney is studying to become a secondary school teacher with a major in mathematics and a minor in English. Carley is currently enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at GRCC and plans on starting the Dental Hygiene program next fall.

We are very grateful to all the faculty and staff who have helped make these scholarships possible for Carley and Rodney. We wish these students all the best in their academic endeavors.

Calkins Science Center

Did you know that the Richard W. Calkins Science Center, which opened in January of 2000, contains a 150-seat auditorium, a greenhouse, a Jurassic Learning Garden, and a cadaver laboratory that uses cadavers rented from Michigan State University?  The building was conceived and planned by the science faculties of the college — a dream they made a reality.

Read about this and much more in Open Door, the newly published 100-year history of GRJC-GRCC. The book can be purchased at Schuler Books, the GRCC Library, or online here.

‘Open Door’ traces early history of Black Student Union

Did you know that the largest and most active GRJC student organization in the 1970s was the Black Student Union? BSU’s first adviser was new Language Arts instructor Pat Pulliam, followed by counselor Tempi Hoskins. Established to celebrate the beauty of blackness and the collective strength of the race, the group served as a focal point for a rapidly growing African American population at the college.

Granddaughter of Mathias J. Alten Funds Annual Award for KCAD Students

March 31, 2015; Ferris State University website

It’s hard to visit a prominent building in downtown Grand Rapids and not find a painting by Mathias Alten. Aside from the obvious locations in art galleries and museums, the American post-Impressionist’s work decorates walls throughout the city in the Grand Rapids Public Library, St. Cecilia Music Center, and various local churches, universities and colleges.

… Kim Smith, owner of Grand Rapids Perception Gallery, has known Gilleo since 1977 and said she donates her grandfather’s art after much consideration. For example, she donated a painting of her father, Capt. Avery Gilleo, to Grand Rapids Community College, where her father was enrolled in the college’s 1914 inaugural class, before leaving to serve in France during World War I.
