Meet the winners of GRCC’s Armen Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) — Top honors in the annual Grand Rapids Community College Armen Awards were handed out recently. eightWest got a chance to sit down with the winners. Sean Mulhall and Jonathan Lopez are students who participated in the project along with Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood, advisor of GRCC’s Collegiate Newspaper and Katherine Morrison of Hospice of Michigan.

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern tennis coach Dave Sukup notches 500th win

GRAND RAPIDS — Dave Sukup has racked up some pretty impressive numbers as Forest Hills Northern’s girls and boys tennis coach.

… Sukup played a year at the University of Michigan in Bo Schembechler’s first season in 1969 and later at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University. He aspired to be a football coach, and he was a successful one at FHN. Sukup coached the Huskies from 1983-1998, and only once did the Huskies finish under the .500 mark, and that was 4-5 in his final season.

He decided to switch to Grand Rapids Community College instead of mounting a huge student loan debt in college.

Dave Van Valkenburg is a Certified Public Accountant and is president and owner of Van Valkenburg Consulting, Inc. Dave has taught accounting and personal taxation as an adjunct professor at Grand Rapids Community College over the past 20 years. Along with his CPA designation, Dave has also held Series 7 and Series 63 licenses (securities licenses) and has extensive experience in the financial markets.

Hospice project wins first place in Armen Awards

First place in Grand Rapids Community College’s Armen Awards went to a project in which students documented the lives of hospice patients.

Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood’s Introduction to Journalism students worked with Hospice of Michigan on the series of stories. A video of the project may be seen here.

The other projects were:

Second place — Drew Rozema and students in his Mobile Application Development and Security course for an app they created for the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts. A video of this project may be seen here.

Third place — Katie VanderMeer and students in her Introduction to Computer Programming course for teaching Orchard View Elementary fifth-graders the fundamentals of coding. A video of the project may be seen here.

Finalist — Bob Schultz and students in his Table Service course for creating a Make-A-Wish Michigan fundraiser. A video of the project may be seen here.

Finalist — Sherry Knoppers and Community Transcultural Nursing students for helping the North End Community Ministry food pantry better promote health and disease prevention. A video of the project may be seen here.

Students teach computer programming to fifth-graders

GRCC programming students in CO 116 introduced programming concepts to the 5th grade classes at Orchard View as part of a service learning project this semester. Computer Information Systems Professor Katie Vander Meer put together a video of the 6 weeks her students spent working with the 5th grade students.

“Being able to share coding with young children in our community and having my GRCC students teach them was an amazing experience in service learning for me,” she said. “Their faces lit up with excitement, watching what they could do with programming…and I’m not just referring to the children.”
