Congratulations to the Van & Marinus Swets 2019 Travel Award Winners! The Foundation was able to award 9 travel award to employees this year.

The MWest Challenge is a student venture competition designed to create cross collaboration between students that span across several universities from West Michigan. Through MWest, entrepreneurially minded students are able to develop and grow new ventures based on their own ideas.
MWest involves nine West Michigan colleges and universities, representing 75,000 students from: Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, Kendall College of Art and Design, Davenport University, Aquinas College, Calvin College, Cornerstone University, Kuyper College, and Hope College.
In this year’s competition, GRCC student Jake Dabkowski was part of the three-student team that won.

These individuals make learning at GRCC a meaningful and impactful experience for our students and working at GRCC an honor and inspiration for fellow employees.
To recognize them, please consider nominating them for the Excellence in Education Award! The Excellence in Education Award was established in 1989 to honor an individual Grand Rapids Community College employee. In 2000, the award was expanded to provide recognition in the form of a staff award, and a separate full-time faculty award. In 2010, an additional award was added for an exemplary adjunct faculty member.
There is a cash award of $1,000 for full-time faculty who have taught at GRCC for at least 5 years, a $750 cash award for adjunct faculty who have taught at least 2 years, and staff members may also be nominated to receive a cash award of $1,000.
Anyone can nominate! Deadline for nominations is May 10, 2019:

The Physical Sciences Department is proud to present our department’s student award winners for 2018-2019. The winners were presented their award at the GRCC Student Leadership Banquet on March 28. From left to right- Madison Jones for Excellence in Geology, Andrew Hulsman for Excellence in Chemistry, and Janine Sweetman for Excellence in Physics.
Madison Jones (Geology) plans to pursue her BS in geology at GVSU. Madison was one of only 7 students selected for a fully-funded geology research program this summer at the University of Texas-El Paso.
Andrew Hulsman is working on completing his BS in Chemistry at GVSU and will be applying to Physician Assistant programs while working full-time as an EMT and going to school full-time.
Janine Sweetman plans to transfer to the University of Michigan to pursue her degree in environmental engineering. Her goals after her degree are to work with corporations to assist them in minimizing their footprints on the environment along with specializing in water quality to prevent threats to the local watersheds like PFAS.

Laura Byers received an Employee Service Award for her long-standing commitment to the healing ministry of Jesus Christ at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services on March 7, 2019. Laura is a psychologist working at the Pine Rest Patient Consultation Center in neuropsychology and an adjunct faculty member at GRCC.

Congratulations to Marisol Blanco of the College Success Center and Sonya Hernandez of the Woodrick Center for Equity and Inclusion who are being recognized as two of the 2018 Top 50 Latinas of Michigan!
The Hispanic Latino Commission of Michigan (HLCOM) is celebrating the Top 50 Latinas of Michigan today in Saginaw, Michigan. The purpose of this award, as explained in this week’s State of Michigan press release, is to recognize women who have “demonstrated commitment to their community by sharing of their time and talent in ways that benefit the community. These women have also had a commitment to life-long learning and expansion of their own personal and professional resources.” Nominations came from across the state.
This weekend, the GRCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (Alpha Upsilon Kappa – AUK) attended their Regional Conference with 18 (of the 28) chapters in the region to participate in leadership building, service opportunities, a college fair, social activities and the awards gala. 2017-2018 has been an exciting year for the chapter and this was very evident at the Regional Awards Gala.
The chapter was able to travel 10 students, an advisor for the weekend and Dr. Pink came for the awards gala. The 2017-2018 executive board (elected student leaders) were present and recognize for all their accomplishments over the past year. The 2018-2019 newly elected executive board were there as well to begin to learn the ropes along with an alumni and other chapter members.

The GRCC Phyllis Fratzke Early Childhood Learning Laboratory won the Advocate Award for Organization at the first “A Night of the ICONS (Impacting Children of our Neighborhoods)” Early Learning Neighborhood GALA.
Trustee Kenyatta Brame was a speaker for the event. Dr. Nkechy Ezeh, CEO & Founder of ELNC, is a GRCC graduate.
ELNC’s Mission: To create and provide targeted neighborhood collaborative partners with technical, developmental, and educational support in order to increase the accessibility of early educational resources for vulnerable children.
