GRCC Homecoming starts MONDAY!

Monday, January 14, kicks off Homecoming week at GRCC! There are different activities each day to help us celebrate. For more information on all of the activities throughout the week, check out the Homecoming page for more details.

Friday’s Games:
On Friday, January 18, we will host a tailgate and cheer on our women’s and men’s basketball teams as they play Lake Michigan College.

A family-friendly tailgate begins at 5 p.m. inside the Hunsberger Arena, and will continue throughout both basketball games. There will be free food (while it lasts) and activities for kids and adults. The women’s basketball game begins at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s basketball game begins at 7:30 p.m.

We want to provide a few lucky employees a chance to have premium court-side seating. For each game we have specially designated premium seats for our GRCC employees to sit along the baseline of the court. A total of 12 spots per game are available. For your chance to win, please email Erin Van Egmond (erinvanegmond@grcc.edu) with the game you would like to sit court-side at (women’s or men’s), and how many people are in your party. We will randomly select winners for these premium seats.

We hope to see you all there to cheer on our Raiders and celebrate Homecoming, GRCC style! Don’t forget to show your Raider pride and wear your blue and gold!

Metallica Gifts Grand Rapids Community College $100K To Beef Up Welding Program

GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids Community College will receive $100,000 from heavy metal band Metallica to help launch a new welding program targeted at nontraditional students that will feature smaller class sizes, flexible scheduling and career preparation assistance.

Southeast-area athletes making impact on collegiate level

GRAND RAPIDS – The fall sports season has ended, the winter season is getting into full swing at colleges and universities around the region, and numerous local athletes are making contributions on the collegiate level this season.

… Sammie Ryans, an East Kentwood grad, is turning in a solid sophomore season with the Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team. Ryan is averaging 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.

Support GRCC Athletics scholarships at tomorrow’s Grand Rapids Drive basketball game

Scholarships are vitally import for so many GRCC students to have opportunities for an academic pathway leading to credits for transfer or degrees, or in-demand career skills. That includes our student athletes.

The Grand Rapids Drive basketball team is supporting GRCC and our student athletes with a special takeover night tomorrow (Friday), November 30. The game starts at 7 p.m.

Drive players that night will join the Raider Nation, wearing special jerseys highlighting GRCC Athletics.

Fans will also get a chance to participate in the Drive’s 50/50 ball toss taking place in between the third and fourth quarter. All jersey auction proceeds and half of the 50/50 pot will go toward GRCC athletic scholarships.

GRJC basketball coach Gene Paxton inducted into Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame

Former Grand Rapids Junior College coach Gene Paxton recalled the sacrifices that many of his student-athletes made to be able to play basketball.

Paxton, 86, was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday, joining former NFL player David Harris, NBA star Chris Kaman, Michigan State University golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, former OK Conference Commissioner Jim Haskins, and the Paganelli family of football officials (and GRCC alumni), Carl Sr., Carl Jr., Perry and Dino.

Paxton guided GRJC teams to 517 victories over 25 seasons, winning five league championships — all without being able to offer students scholarships to play.

The students “had a lot of stuff to overcome before they even got on the floor,” he told the crowd assembled at the Van Andel Arena. “I still can’t get over how much some of those guys had to sacrifice to play a sport. So many of these players were working jobs — full-time and part-time jobs — they were going without so many things in other areas that other folks take for granted. I just can’t tell you how much I still admire people in that category.”

Paxton started coaching in 1965 and retired in 1990 as the winningest coach in school history with a 517-280 record. He’s a member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame.

45 teams earn MCCAA All-Academic Team Awards

The Michigan Community College Athletic Association is proud to announce that 45 teams have earned MCCAA All-Academic Team honors. To earn the honors a team must have a cumulative grade point average for all members of the team must be 3.00 or higher for both semesters combined.

Mott Community College had six teams (Volleyball, Softball, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Basketball and Golf) earn All-Academic Team honors. Grand Rapids Community College had five teams. Ancilla College, Lansing Community College, Macomb Community College and Muskegon Community College had four teams each. Softball was the sport with the most All-Academic Teams with 11, while Volleyball had seven teams. Women’s cross country had six teams, while Women’s Basketball has five teams.

Derrick King named Wyoming Lee boys basketball coach

Wyoming — Lee’s boys basketball team won four games last winter, but Derrick King has a plan to get the Rebels on track.

King, who served as an assistant coach for the Grand Rapids Community College men’s team this past winter, was recently hired to coach the Rebels.

Skirka Named New Murray State Baseball Head Coach

… Skirka’s first collegiate assistant coaching position was at Grand Rapids Community College in 2007-08 where his team advanced to the NJCAA World Series. He spent the 2008-09 season at Ouachita Baptist working under former Murray State player Chris Moddelmog.

West Michigan’s Jubal Brass to appear in concert on April 29

Jubal Brass, an 18-member brass choir, will present an evening of worship through Christian music at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Georgetown Bible Church, 4114 Baldwin St., Hudsonville.

… Jubal Brass has a long history of leaders with notable music credentials. Tuba player Paul Hoelzley, co-founder of Jubal Brass, directed the ensemble for two years until he resigned to teach at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland. The other co-founder, John Scripps, then directed for two years until Charlie Buffham took over the baton. Buffham was a music teacher at Grand Rapids Community College, and served as both conductor and arranger for Jubal Brass. John Varineau then came to Michigan as a music professor at the Grand Rapids Baptist College (now Cornerstone University) and as the assistant conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He directed Jubal Brass for 15 years.

Grand Rapids Christian announces new boys basketball coach

Grand Rapids Christian’s boys basketball program is losing an experienced, successful coach now that Mark Warners has stepped down.

… Christian athletic director Jason Heerema announced Sunday that Eric Taylor has been hired to coach the Eagles. Taylor has served as an assistant under Warners for the past four seasons, and before that, he was the Grand Rapids Community College women’s coach for three seasons. He was named Western Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2010.

Review: ‘Building the Wall’ starts a powerful, captivating conversation

A conversation was sparked after the first production of “Building the Wall” by playwright Robert Schenkkan premiered in Michigan last night. The 70-minute-play, directed by Carrie McNulty, has already sparked controversy and confusion in the city with its artwork of an angry Donald Trump on the poster. What’s important to be pointed out though, is that the Actors Theatre Grand Rapids production is less about Trump and more about the messages and ideologies that existed long before the last election.

Kent County considers early childhood tax for November ballot
