Formation Retreats are next week! Grab your spot today!

Formation retreats are a long-standing tradition at GRCC and this year, we are once again pleased to offer this opportunity to faculty and staff. Based on the work of Dr. Parker Palmer, formation is a three-day, two-night professional development opportunity in which participants reflect on what they believe about their work, reconnect to the passion that brought them to the work, and renew themselves as practitioners. Two retreats will be held this year, both at the picturesque Gilchrist Retreat Center near Three Rivers, Michigan.

The Introduction to Formation Retreat will run from May 11 – 13.

The Continuing Formation Retreat for prior participants will be held May 8 – 10.

The retreats are offered at no cost to GRCC employees, but enrollment in each retreat is limited to 10 participants, so register today!

If you would like more information, visit the GRCC Formation Retreat web page at www.grcc.edu/formation . To register, visit http://cms.grcc.edu/humanresources/staffdevelopment/learningopportunitiesregistration

OHCC Open for Summer Registration

This Online and Hybrid Certification Course is designed to provide instructors with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver a high-quality online/hybrid course. Successful participants will also be able to teach effectively online through active facilitation and a variety of student engagement techniques and technologies. Training in Blackboard Basics (on the latest version of the LMS) is a prerequisite).

This is a six (6) week, rigorous course that includes weekly participation and assignment requirements. Please plan ahead to ensure you have the time to complete all of the required course activities. This training is much more than “Blackboard training”, as it includes elements of instructional design and strategies for building, developing, sequencing, and delivering online content. When you are done, you will have a template for your online and/or hybrid course.

This summer we will run one OHCC session. This course is six weeks long. Each week ends on Thursday at 11:59 p.m. (EST/EDT).You must complete the course, including the assignments for all six weeks, for certification. This includes the completion of your final presentation. Participants will:

  • Attend the campus session on Friday if they do not complete the previous week’s assignments.
  • Watch a Camtasia Relay recording if they do not attend the campus session.
  • Complete all online assignments (e.g. reading, discussions, learning activities).
  • Post content to an empty/template course in Blackboard.
  • Complete assessments or self-assessments.
  • Make a final presentation and submit a course evaluation.

The campus sessions are on Fridays, May 13th-June 24th, 1:00-2:30pm in 351 Main. This is a hybrid course (online course with some classroom instruction). However, you are not required to attend these campus sessions if the previous week’s work is completed. Those who do not attend will watch a video of the campus session.

If you need Blackboard Basics (the OHCC prerequisite), there is a face-to-face session scheduled on May 13th from 10:30 am-12:00 pm in 351 Main, or you can take the training online.

For more information about the OHCC, visit www.grcc.edu/ohcc .

Are you a GRCC Faculty or Staff Member Interested in Attending Graduate School?

If so, we’d like to help. This summer we are reviving a program designed to connect GRCC faculty and staff who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees with their colleagues who have already been through the process. This revival will launch with an organizational luncheon on May 20 from 11:30-2:30 in Sneden 108. We are looking for both those interested in degrees and those willing to serve as mentors. If you fall into either of those categories, we’d love to hear from you! More information can be found at www.grcc.edu/graduatementoring . You can register to attend the lunch by going to http://goo.gl/forms/YEcU4qxp12 and filling out the form. The deadline to register for the luncheon is May 8. Please contact Dr. Jeremy Osborn (josborn@grcc.edu or 616.234.2279), or Dr. Frank Conner (fconner@grcc.edu or 616.234.3612) for more information.
