Congratulations to Stephanie Thomas, who achieved All-American status at the NJCAA Division I National Championship!

Thomas — a freshman who ran in her first 5k only two months ago — finished 35 overall (19:20.0) in the women’s championship race at Nationals. She is the first athlete in GRCC’s cross country program to earn All-American honors.

A Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate, she was also named to the All-Region XII First Team and received All-MCCAA, MCCAA All-Freshman, and MCCAA Freshman of the Year honors.

GRCC to host state volleyball championship; cross country team heads into regionals


The 2017 Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Volleyball State Championship Tournament will be hosted by the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) #3 ranked GRCC Volleyball team on Saturday, October 28, at the Ford Fieldhouse. The Raiders, who won the MCCAA Western Conference title with a perfect 16-0 (23-1 overall) mark will face Oakland Community College (23-8, 11-1 MCCAA-East) at 12 p.m. In the other semifinal, Mott Community College (26-5, 11-1 MCCAA-East) will play Muskegon Community College (22-14, 14-2 MCCAA-West) at 12 p.m. The winner of the two semifinal matches will face one another for the MCCAA State Championship at 2:30 p.m.

Regardless of the State Championship Tournament results, the Raiders have clinched the 2nd seed in next week’s NJCAA Region XII, District F Volleyball Tournament that will be held at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, MI. GRCC’s first match will be Thursday, November 2, at 6 p.m. The District F Volleyball Tournament will conclude on Saturday, November 4, with the winner of the tournament advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament in Charleston, West Virginia.

Cross Country

The GRCC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Team travels to Lansing, MI, on Saturday, October 28, to participate in the NJCAA Region XII Championship. The 14th ranked Men’s Cross Country team looks to capture their first Regional title since the program’s rebirth four years ago. In order to do so, the Raiders will have to best Lansing Community College and Vincennes College (Ind.), the No. 1 and 2 teams in the region. For the Women’s team, they are coming off their best team performance of the season, winning their first race in the last four years. The Raiders will look to cement their position in the region by placing in the top ten on Saturday.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Tony Kimbrough and Marty Martens helped Western Michigan University win a Mid-American Conference football championship in 1988.

… “Football around these parts, on the west side, is top-notch. I mean, our conference alone that we play in, the OK Red, there’s a battle every week,” said Kimbrough, a Detroit native who played at Grand Rapids Community College before he transferred to WMU, where he is now in the Athletics Hall of Fame. He’s also coached at GRCC and WMU.

GR Urban Trail 5k to benefit GRCC cross country team

Explore the Ken-O-Sha Trail while supporting GRCC’s cross country team with the first GR Urban Trail 5k on August 11!

The race starts in the parking lot at Calvary Baptist Church, 1200 28th St. SE, before moving to the trail. The top male and female finishers and age group finishers will receive prizes, and refreshments will follow the event.

Proceeds from the event will support GRCC’s cross country team.
