Two Students Awarded with the GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship

The GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship was created by the employees of the college in honor of GRCC’s 100th year celebration. Currently, two awards are given each year: one to an incoming student and the other to a returning student that has earned at least 12 credits at GRCC. These scholarships are awarded based on scholastic achievement as well as extracurricular involvement and community service. Applicants are also asked to submit a short essay explaining why they feel they deserve the scholarship. The recipients are then selected by a cross-college committee made up of representatives from each of the various employee groups (Faculty, Meet & Confer, CEBA, APSS, and Campus Police).

We are pleased to announce and congratulate the 2018-19 scholarship recipients for the GRCC Faculty and Staff Centennial Scholarship: Carley Hume and Rodney Van Lagen. Both have been awarded $1,000! Rodney is studying to become a secondary school teacher with a major in mathematics and a minor in English. Carley is currently enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at GRCC and plans on starting the Dental Hygiene program next fall.

We are very grateful to all the faculty and staff who have helped make these scholarships possible for Carley and Rodney. We wish these students all the best in their academic endeavors.

Dental Assistant students host bone marrow registration

Valentine’s Day is almost here and GRCC Dental Assistant students are asking you to “marrow” them!

On February 12th and 15th, GRCC Dental Assisting students are hosting Will You Marrow Me GRCC, a bone marrow donor registration drive. Bone marrow donations give someone a chance to overcome life-threatening diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. Seventy percent of patients who need a life-saving donor will not find that matching donor in their family. They must turn to the Be The Match bone marrow registry to find an unrelated donor. All it takes to join is swabbing the inside of your cheeks with a cotton swab and filling out a brief consent form.

Consider learning more at the upcoming Will You Marrow Me GRCC event.

  • Monday February 12, 8-11am, 1st floor of the Student Activity Center
  • Thursday February 15, 8-11am, 4th floor Main

Dental students host blood marrow registration drive

Did you know that someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia every 3 minutes? For many of those patients, a marrow transplant is their only hope for survival. You could be their match. On February 12th and 15th here at GRCC, the Dental Assisting students will be hosting the “Will you Marrow Me” bone marrow registry event. All it takes to give hope to blood cancer patients is 10 minutes of your time to complete a swab of your cheek. There is about a 1 in 430 chance you’ll actually match a patient and be requested to donate and the most common way to donate is similar to giving plasma! So if you’re between the ages of 18-44, please consider stopping by the Student Activity Center on Feb. 12 or the 4th floor of Main on Feb. 5 from 8-11 am to learn more.
