Scholarship opportunity for Police Academy, Criminal Justice, Education, and Healthcare students

The 2018-2019 Grand Rapids Community College Bragg, Harvard, MuhammadSmith (BHMS) Scholarship Application is open until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019. This scholarship awards between one and three scholarships of $1000-$3000.

BHMS scholarships are intended for students who are either:

  1. In the GRCC Police Academy, or
  2. Enrolled in a GRCC degree, pathway, or program and planning to work in a public service career related to criminal justice, education, or healthcare.

Reuben Mwangi leads Teacher Education Seminar

The Education Department hosted a Teacher Education Seminar on Tuesday, April 10. The seminar focused on “Managing Anxiety In and Out of the Classroom” and was a success with an impressive turnout. A big thanks to GRCC counselor Reuben Mwangi for his excellent presentation on this relevant topic!

The Bragg, Harvard, MuhammadSmith Why We Can’t Wait Fund launches its $3,000 inaugural GRCC Student Scholarship for students studying in criminal justices, education, and health-care areas and planning on public service careers!

  • First scholarships will be awarded for the Winter 2018 Semester.
  • Applications due by 5 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2017.

Basic eligibility:

  • Non-GRCC Police Academy applications: 12 credit hours & 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • GRCC Police Academy students: Must be currently enrolled in the academy.

Application requirements:

  • Complete application by 5 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2017.
  • Include one letter of reference.
  • Application link.
  • PDF application.
  • Note: All applications must be submitted using Google form

Downtown AMP Lab to tackle shortage of manufacturing talent

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Construction is underway at Western Michigan University’s downtown Grand Rapids $3 million manufacturing laboratory.

AMP Lab @WMU, an Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Laboratory, is being built in collaboration with West Michigan manufacturers and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) to address the shortage of skilled trades and engineering employees in the region.

… What did you study and where did you graduate from?

I have an associate’s degree in elementary from Grand Rapids Community College, a bachelor’s degree in K-fifth grade education, sixth- through eighth-grade social studies, and kindergarten through eighth physical education and health. I also received my master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in educational leadership, supervision, and administration.

Education Department, Counseling Center provide session on suicide prevention

The Education Department and GRCC Counseling Center presented “Warning Signs of Suicide in Students” on Wednesday, February 15. Suicide Prevention is an important topic to talk about and the Counseling Center prepared students with potentially life-saving training. A big thanks to all who came and made the seminar a huge success.
