Annual Employee Benefits Fair and Flu Shot Clinic Next Wednesday

Collect a ticket at the welcome table to be entered into the raffle drawing, Or play our benefit scavenger hunt for a chance to win the grand prize. Items will be placed on the vendors tables. To participate in the grand prize raffle drawing, you will need to visit the vendor tables and locate the items that are on your raffle scavenger hunt card. Once you have identified all the items on the card and collected a sticker from the vendor, give your card to Angie Ramirez at the entrance for a chance to win the grand prize. Good Luck! Employees who are getting a flu shot will automatically be entered into the raffle drawing. Save the Date – GRCC Flu Shot Clinic on October 24

The 2018 GRCC Flu Shot Clinic for Staff will be held at the Annual Benefits Fair.

  • When: Wednesday, October 24, 2018
  • Where: ATC Banquet Rooms 118, 120, 122, and 124
  • Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The best way to prevent the flu and its spread is to get a flu shot. Protect yourself. Protect your family. Protect your friends.

The cost to GRCC staff will be $20 cash or check made payable to “Grand Rapid Community College.”

Employees covered under the WMHIP health plans can receive the flu shot at no charge. You will need to bring your insurance card to this event in order for Spectrum Health to bill on your behalf.

Spectrum Health Visiting Nurses will administer flu shots.

Fitness in the Workplace professional development workshop this Friday

Most Americans with desk jobs report not getting enough exercise. Additionally, prolonged sitting, especially at a computer, can cause strain on muscles and joints, particularly of the neck and back, and cause pain. Simple changes can be incorporated into your workday to help to you become more active, reduce stress, and feel good!

This seminar will discuss proper desk ergonomics, stretches, and light exercises you can do around your workplace; stress reduction strategies; and how to make easy behavior changes that can help you feel great throughout the day!

Wednesday, 9/26: Benefits 101

  • These sessions will provide an overview of health plans, FSA, HSA, and optional benefits offered through Grand Rapids Community College.

Thursday, 9/27: Drupal Basics

  • In this course, participants will learn to navigate the Drupal system, understand and use content types, and edit existing content.

Friday, 9/28: Fitness in the Workplace (NEW Session)

We are two members away from our 15 member minimum to continue with Weight Watchers at Work, so if you’ve been thinking about joining, now is the perfect time! Our current members have collectively lost over 500 pounds since January!

Cost for the program is $156 for 12 weeks of on-campus meetings (on Thursdays) beginning September 13th and online e-tool access. Did you also know that if you take advantage of the Flex Spending Account, the cost of the program could be covered with a medical necessity doctor’s note? For more information, please contact the Benefits Office. If you’d like to join, please attend our next meeting on Thursday, September 13th, at 12:30 p.m. in room 144 Main to register and submit payment. Payment can be made via credit/debit card or check.

Upcoming Mind-Body Wellness Events from Counseling & Career Development

Counseling & Career Development is presenting a series of Mind-Body Wellness events this Fall. These events are intended to promote student wellness, particularly their mental and emotional health and resiliency. We’re trying out some new offerings and formats this semester, including weekly mindfulness meditation and tai chi activities, as well as brief talks with nutritious snacks. These will be held at a variety of locations across campus. The September flyer is below; the events are also listed on the Raider Connect platform, where students can RSVP (not required, but helpful!).

Flier for the Mind-Body Wellness Series. Text reads: "GRCC Counseling & Career Development’s Mind-Body Wellness Series: September 2018 Events. (1.) Mindfulness Meditation: Mondays, starting September 10, 12-12:30 p.m., Meditation and Prayer Room, Main Floor Library and Learning Commons. Did you know that regular practice of mindfulness meditation can reduce stress, improve attention and concentration, increase feelings of connectedness, and may strengthen the immune system and improve stress-related physical and mental health conditions? Want to check it out for yourself? Join us for any of our weekly mindfulness meditation sessions to learn how to meditate or build on any previous meditation experience you may have. GRCC counselor, Emily Nisley, will facilitate sessions using a variety of common mindfulness meditation exercises. Our practice will be secular; no particular religious or spiritual beliefs are required. Chairs and floor seating are available; you’re welcome to bring a mat, cushion, towel, and/or blanket for more comfortable floor seating if desired. (2.) Tai Chi & Tea: Tuesdays, starting September 11, 12-1 p.m., Student Center Room 336. Originally developed in ancient China, tai chi is an exercise with benefits for the mind and body. Regular practice of tai chi’s slow, continuous movements with coordinated breathing and mental focus can decrease feelings of stress, improve mood, and increase strength, flexibility, and balance. The tai chi style we’ll practice was designed to be safe and gentle; it can even be done seated if needed. GRCC counselor Emily Nisley will lead the sessions, with about 45 minutes of tai chi, followed by time to enjoy a cup of tea together if you’d like. No experience necessary. Clothes you can move in and flat-soled shoes are recommended. Those with a health condition should consult their health care provider before beginning tai chi. (3.) Zzz’s Get Degrees!: Thursday, September 20, 1:30-2 p.m., Sneden Hall Room 103; Wednesday, September 26, 11-11:30 a.m., Cook Hall Room 213. Getting enough good-quality sleep lays a foundation for physical and emotional wellness, and is vital for maximizing the power of your attention and memory to achieve academic success. Despite this, there’s practically an epidemic of sleep deprivation amongst college students! Join us to learn how sleep (or lack thereof) impacts academic performance and health. Assess your own sleep quality and leave with 10 strategies for improving your sleep right away! Light refreshments will be served (while they last). All GRCC students, faculty, & staff are welcome. Walking Challenge Winners!!!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the “Going the Distance at GRCC” Walking Challenge! 22 teams, comprised of both students and employees, competed against one other to accumulate the most steps. All in all, 125 participants took a total of 6,722,398 steps….or 33,612 MILES!! Congratulations to the 3 teams who rose to the top, step by step:

  • 1st Place: Pink’s Pedominators of various departments with 452,107 steps / 2,261 miles
  • 2nd Place: Couch Potatoes of Student Employment Services with 448,575 steps / 2,243 miles
  • 3rd Place: Tread Shredders of IT with 423,869 steps / 2,119 miles

Fall Wellness Schedule Now Available!

Classes will soon be in session, and so will our fall wellness classes! Build a little “YOU” time into your busy days and join us. We have a class for everyone, from beginners to advanced. Check out the schedule, grab a friend, and come move your body!

As always, there’s no need to sign up in advance – just show up and see what the fun is all about. You are welcome to bring your spouse, child over 18, or friend(s) to these classes. Non-GRCC participants are asked to pay a small $20 fee per semester. All are welcome!

**Please note wellness classes will not be held on September 3rd or the week of November 19-23 in observance of holidays.**

Despite the toasty temperatures last week, participants in the Going the Distance at GRCC Walking Challenge logged over 1 million steps! Pictured are 4 Tread Shredders with their game faces on, while their other two teammates are working hard to catch up to the Sole Sisters, who are leading the pack! The Canning Diva® will facilitate a two-hour workshop teaching the basics of home canning, dehydrating, and proper long-term storage methods. Additionally, the workshop will provide a hands-on opportunity to learn the art and craft of home canning. This is an instructional and participative class where you can help prep foods we are canning. Each participant will take home a jar of their culinary creation.

Honey, We Shrunk Our Colleagues: Weight Watchers At Work Success!

In just 20 weeks, a group of 25 employees from all across GRCC lost a combined total of 428 pounds through the Weight Watchers at Work program! Meeting every Thursday in the Far Side Room, this group has shared stories of struggles, triumphs, and offered support to one another on their journeys to becoming healthier versions of themselves. Way to go!
