Honors Program welcomes 30 new students

The Honors Program Orientation was held on Thursday, May 16, welcoming 30 new students to GRCC and to the Honors Program. Students and their families were provided dinner, information on the Honors Program, a campus tour, advising support when registering for classes as well as a resource presentation for parents. The event was made possible by the amazing efforts of our Orientation Team, Experiential Learning staff, Honors faculty, Honors Student Ambassadors, Instructional Support, advising faculty and Financial Aid staff.  Additional kudos to the catering team, photographer, Printing Services and graphics designer.

Blood drive today in the Student Center

GRCC’s Honors Program and the Office of Student Life are hosting Michigan Blood for a blood drive TODAY from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (SCC 234) of the Student Center.

Success in this program is not only measured by academic performance, degree completion, or transfer, it includes building collaborative relationships with faculty and peers. Students gain a competitive edge through the development of strong leadership, research, and service-learning skills.

Students begin the program every by taking Honors 101, a 1-credit course offered in a 7-week format. The next section starts January 2019!

Program Benefits:

  • Unique opportunities to learn alongside influential college and community leaders.
  • The opportunity to create a collaborative research project.
  • A dedicated advisor to help you develop a clear pathway to degree completion and/or a successful transfer to a four-year institution.

There is still time for students to join the Honors Program this fall! Students begin the program every fall by taking Honors 101, a 1-credit course offered in a 7-week format. The next section starts Wednesday, October 17th.

The Honors Program at Grand Rapids Community College helps students achieve their academic and personal goals. Our honors program is a small community of highly motivated students who want more out of their college experience. Success in this program is not only measured by academic performance, degree completion, or transfer; it includes building collaborative relationships with faculty and peers.

  • The opportunity to create a collaborative research project.
  • A dedicated advisor to help each student develop a clear pathway to degree completion and/or a successful transfer to a four-year institution.

Application Process

Interested students must complete and submit the online program application. Upon submission of the application, the student will meet with one of our staff to discuess what it means to be a student in the Honors Program in terms of participation and completion.

Honors Program students volunteer at Comprenew

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, Honors students served at Comprenew, where they learned about the impacts of recycling electronics and overall technology stewardship. Special thanks to professor Melanie Schiele-Gady in guiding our pre- and post-reflections. Did you know Comprenew is the only nonprofit organization in Michigan that collects outdated electronics and holds the most certifications to ensure proper disposal of harmful chemicals and overall data security?

Seeking students for GRCC Honors Program

We are seeking passionate students for the GRCC Honors Program.  Interested students will enroll in HNR 101 – Introduction to Honors this coming Winter semester.  Students admitted into the Honors Program will received a scholarship to cover the cost of this 1-credit course.

Honors students spend Day of Service in parks

This year’s GRCC Honors Program Annual Day of Service Event was held on Saturday, October 7, 2017.  Faculty, students and staff served at both Blandford Nature Center and Friends of Grand Rapids Parks to take part in projects that were centered on environmental stewardship. A special thank you to Ashley Fox and Melanie Scheile-Gady for facilitating such a great event.

Honors projects sought for Winter 2018

The Department of Experiential Learning is currently seeking faculty who are interested in developing an Honors Project ready to be offered for Winter 2018. The design and facilitation of these projects can fulfill FPE requirements. Interested faculty will be supported over the next several weeks in the design of their Honors Projects.

If you are interested in developing an Honors Project, please email Leigh Kleinert by Friday, September 15, and/or attend our Honors Project Workshop on Friday, September 15, from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Register through the Center for Teaching Excellence. Food is provided.
