The 2019 planning team: Brian Beecher, Nicole Nyenhuis, Kurt Meinders, David Houseman, and Angela Salinas

Generously supported by various campus departments

We’ve “stepped it up” with TWO fun improvements this year:

The competition increases to SIX weeks! (Competition begins June 24 and ends August 2).

Location of the week: Each week (on a specific day and time) the Walking Challenge (WC) planning team will meet participants at a featured location within walking distance of Main Campus, WC participants can take a selfie at the designated location to claim their weekly prize! Can you go the distance?

Weekly locations will be announced via the Google Communities page that all WC participants will be invited to join.

As was the process last year, team members’ weekly total steps will be compiled for the entire team’s weekly average to determine who will take the lead each week. Competition is fierce — and friendly of course!

The WC is a great way to get out and enjoy the lovely summer weather, see various parts of downtown GR, and interact and engage with your fellow members of the GRCC family!

Team Captains: Gather your fellow colleagues and form a team (minimum of 4, maximum of 6 members; students are encouraged to participate too!)

GRCC Retiree Biography: Teri Dilworth

Teri Dilworth

Teri Dilworth

Teri started working part-time in August of 1986 and went full-time in 1988. Her entire career has been dedicated to GRCC and our students in the Disability Support Services and Occupational Support office. “That response has always been met with surprise. I truly liked where I work and what my role entailed in the department. It offered me the opportunity to interact with students, parents, community and staff. I’ve seen many students struggle with various barriers which included students with learning disabilities, mental illness, physical and health limitations as well as those who were single parents and low income, etc. Seeing these students find success, whether it was completing a two-year degree, transferring or even a couple of classes for personal interest, allowed me to be a part of their journey. I loved watching them grow and build confidence within themselves. I am proud of the fact that this was my one and only position at GRCC.”

When asked about a favorite story the students she has served, Teri said: “The staff I work with are incredible. They are talented, hard-working and caring people. That will be the most difficult part of retiring for me as I leave my co-workers and friends.”

Teri has helped many students feel and recognize that they belonged in our GRCC community. When asked about an experience that demonstrated she belonged at GRCC, she shared: “For me, the definition of belonging is when I see and feel there is strong leadership within the college community. Example: During my years on the APSS Executive Board, I felt most valued when Dr. Pink requested to meet with the Board President (Sandy Gregory) and Vice President (Me). I felt a true sense of engagement during our meetings as well as being invested in what we brought to him with our concerns and opinions.”

Teri isn’t making plans right away, she wants to ease into retirement. “I have a new grandbaby coming in July, which will make four grandchildren for my husband and I. I have a scheduled trip for a few days in August. I also have a big project to start this summer. Renovations on a newly purchased vintage trailer.”

“I have always felt fortunate and proud to be an employee of GRCC. I have raised a family while working here and now I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to retire at 58.  I will miss the people but I am ready to do something on my own time clock.”

Teri, how can we thank you enough for the time, care and dedication you have shown to GRCC students? Enjoy retirement, have fun with your grandbabies and traveling in your vintage trailer, and visit your friends at GRCC as often as possible. Congratulations!

GRCC Retiree Biography: Jan Boynton

Jan began working at GRCC in February 2005 in the Financial Aid office. Jan has worked within Financial Aid for 40 years. “Financial Aid folks are a close knit group of people. I have stayed in touch with many of my colleagues from Western Michigan University (where I started my Financial Aid career), along with friends at Davenport, where I worked before starting at GRCC. I have enjoyed the camaraderie and many friendships I have acquired over the years.”

When asked about a story that demonstrated she belonged at GRCC, Jan said: “It was always a lot fun to help out at graduation and see students I had helped throughout the years graduate.”

Jan will be keeping busy following retirement. Jan and her husband are expecting their first grandbaby June 15th. “Our son and daughter-in-law live in Alaska! So we are planning a trip up there soon after I retire! Along with traveling to Alaska, we hope to do some other traveling around the country to national parks. We will also be spending more time at the family cottage on Elk Lake (north of Traverse City).”

Congratulations on your retirement, Jan! Your dedication to GRCC and our students is recognized and appreciated. We wish you the best in your retirement, enjoy your new grandbaby!

Help payroll team by turning in timesheets on time

Attention employees and supervisors!

We all appreciate the great work of our payroll team here in HR.  Please help us help them by turning your timesheets in on time.

While most of us are great about getting timesheets turned in on time, our payroll team spends still spends way too much time correcting timesheets that have been turned in without complete and accurate data, and chasing timesheets that have not been turned in at all.  Last pay date alone, we sent out over 40 emails trying to get timesheets submitted so that we could process payroll.

Please help us by taking the time to complete, review and approve timesheets within provided timelines.  Consider adding a reminder appointment in your calendar if that might help.  Call us if you have questions about how to complete your timesheet.  We are here to help!

New employees, mentors share celebration breakfast

GRCC’s employee mentoring program was designed to help people become acclimated to our campus, its programs and people.

Mentors are a resource, a guide and, especially, a good listener as new employees learn their roles and responsibilities as members of the Raider family.

This week, everyone who became part of GRCC since October 2017 was invited to a special breakfast with their mentors to share their experiences, celebrate the partnership and give some thanks to the folks who helped them along the way.

Provost Laurie Chesley shared her thoughts about the valuable role mentors play at GRCC, but also throughout our lives.

Take Your Child to Work Day recap

GRCC hosted its first Take Your Child to Work Day event on Thursday, May 17. Employees and their children were able to experience a handful of the great things our campus has to offer, such as getting an ID badge at Student Life, checking out a Campus Police cruiser (and fingerprinting!), Ford Fieldhouse fun, and planting bean seedlings with the Biology Department. There were also games, laughs, and prizes a plenty!

The team extends a big thank you to all the friends who were able to join us. Also, a giant Raider Salute to those who helped make this great day possible:

  • Jan Colvin and Janis Qualls (Biology)
  • Kaye Newberry and Paul Coulson (Campus Police)
  • Sue Goeman (Ford Fieldhouse)
  • Brune Garcia (Student Life)
  • Todd Torrey and Jim Schafer (Media)
  • Jim Schultz and Dale Young (Facilities)
  • Keaton Krupa and Team (Creative Dining)
