New SingularityU chapter fosters “Exponential Technologies for Good”

Thanks to local futurist, Mary Brown, Singularity University (SU) is establishing a chapter in Grand Rapids, one of 142 chapters in 66 world locations recognized as up-and-coming technology centers. SU had been on Brown’s radar for some time. After attending its Global Summit, she submitted an application in hopes of starting a Grand Rapids chapter. Because Grand Rapids is recognized as an emerging center of innovation, the chapter application was approved.

… SingularityU Grand Rapids team members include Brown, the chapter ambassador, and Jan Mathorne, owner of HUCAPA – Human Capital Partners, an executive search consulting firm based in Denmark, Michigan, and California. Brown, a futurist, focuses on ethical adoption of AI in healthcare and society via human-centered design and organizational change and learning. A former senior digital experience analyst at Priority Health, she currently serves as senior consultant for learning and development in Spectrum Health’s Inclusion and Diversity department and as adjunct faculty at Grand Rapids Community College in the psychology and business departments.

On Monday, November 12, the GRCC Foundation celebrated with recipients of the Spectrum Health Care Professionals Education Scholarship.  We also celebrated the second year of the partnership between GRCC and Spectrum Health, which made these scholarships possible.  In just two years of this program, over $700,000 will have been awarded to sophomores in our Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Medical Assisting programs.   We are so thankful to Spectrum Health for providing this opportunity for our students.

… Grand Rapids Community College and Spectrum Health honored the first students who received need-based Spectrum Health Care Professionals Education Scholarships. The 96 students are sophomores in GRCC’s Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Radiologic Technology programs. Scholarships ranged from $3,000-$4,000 with almost $350,000 awarded for 2017-18. Students in the Medical Assisting program will be eligible for the 2018-19 scholarships.

… GRCC to present the play ‘Dead Man’s Cell Phone’

From Thursday, March 29, to Saturday, March 31, Grand Rapids Community College will be presenting the play “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” by Sarah Ruhl. Ruhl, who is a MacArthur Fellow and Pulitzer Prize finalist, set the comedy in a quiet cafe, where a constantly ringing cell phone forces a woman to confront her assumptions about mortality, redemption and technology.

Medical marijuana clinic rolls with changes

With the possibility of Michiganders voting on marijuana legalization in November, a Grand Rapids-based clinic is keeping an eye on legislation that could affect its bottom line.

… (Paul) Farage and (Tony) Holmes knew each other from attending Grand Rapids Community College then Grand Rapids Junior College. They had stayed in touch off and on over the years, Farage living in Hawaii and California and Holmes in Chicago.

Poet David Cope to hold reading at Kentwood library

David Cope, former poet laureate of Grand Rapids, will read from his latest release, “The Invisible Keys,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Kentwood branch of the Kent District Library, 4950 Breton SE.

… Cope, a longtime Grand Rapids Community College professor and poet, was named Grand Rapids poet laureate by the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids in 2011.

Last night we celebrated with the inaugural recipients of the Spectrum Health Care Professionals Education Scholarship. We also celebrated the partnership between Spectrum Health and GRCC that made these scholarships possible. Spectrum Health created this scholarship in 2016 to encourage and assist students interested in health sciences or health careers. The 96 students who received the scholarship are sophomores in our Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Radiologic Technology programs. The need-based scholarships range from $3,000 to $4,000 with almost $350,000 awarded for 2017-18. We are so thankful to Spectrum Health for providing this opportunity for our students.

Radiologic technology students host Teddy Bear Clinic for preschool

On October 31, the Rad Tech Program hosted our annual Teddy Bear Clinic with the GRCC Preschool. The preschoolers received a tour of the lab and equipment, and were provided rides on stretchers and radiography tables to become familiar with the large equipment. They also participated in many activities within the classroom to teach them about bones, x-rays, and the human body. The Rad Tech students triage their toy, and then proceed to take an x-ray that the preschoolers get to take home. Each toy is given a certificate of “good health” for them to “resume normal activities” once they leave.

Motorcyclist dies after driver, 85, pulls into his path

JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, MI — A 23-year-old Saranac man died after a vehicle pulled into his path at Adams Street and Eighth Avenue.

Police identified Devon Kurzhals as the motorcyclist.

(Devon Kurzhals was a recent graduate from the radiologic technology program.)

Tony Kimbrough named Coach of the Week

Detroit — The Detroit Lions have named Tony Kimbrough of East Kentwood High School the week four recipient of the 2017 Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan High School Football Coach of the Week Program.  Kimbrough’s East Kentwood Falcons defeated Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern 46-32 to run their record to 4-0 on the season.

Kimbrough has coached for 21 seasons and is currently in his 4th season as a head coach at East Kentwood.  He was an assistant at East Kentwood for four seasons, Grand Rapids Community College for three seasons, and Western Michigan University for two seasons, in addition to coaching in the Arena Football League for eight seasons.  The Falcons have made two state playoff appearances under Kimbrough, advancing to the Division 1 semifinals in 2014 where they lost to eventual champion Clarkston.  His career record is 25-11 (69.4%).  On Friday, September 22, the Falcons host the 3-1 Grandville Bulldogs in an Ottawa-Kent Conference Red Division battle.

GRPD: Man jumps fence at public pool, drowns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 21-year-old man drowned in a closed Grand Rapids public pool Tuesday morning, police say.

… (Damon) Smith-Phillips’ father, David Smith, said his son was a Detroit native and a graduate of Osborn High School. Smith-Phillips was in Grand Rapids to attend community college and his father said he hoped to have a career in video game design.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta joined Gov. Rick Snyder at Grand Rapids Community College on Monday, where they discussed the importance of apprenticeships before touring the third and fourth floors of the college’s Peter and Pat Cook Academic Hall. The visit comes as part of a series of tours that Snyder and Acosta are conducting focused on manufacturing and medical apprenticeships.

Advisory Committee celebration a success

GRCC hosted a celebration on May 19 to thank our advisory committee members for their contributions to our programs and our students. Nearly 100 community members and GRCC faculty representing 26 different advisory committees enjoyed breakfast and a brief presentation that included a video honoring the Radiologic Technology Advisory Committee as our Advisory Committee of the Year.

Retiree Biography: Deb Nordman

Deb Nordman has worked at GRCC since 1995, first as a clinical instructor at Saint Mary’s Health Services, then an adjunct for both the Radiology and Psychology departments and then full-time faculty serving as the program director of the Rad Tech Program. Deb said that her students have been her favorite part of the job; she has learned so much from them. Her program is unique in that she works with cohorts for two years, allowing her to get to know the students better. Many of her students keep in touch with her after they’ve completed their program. Deb shared one particular story about a student:

“Many years ago, I had a student that was experiencing housing issues in the final semester of classes for the program. For a brief time, she lived in her car with her young son (I was not aware of this at the time). The student had an excellent attendance record and always participated in class. However, her housing issues caused her to miss some time and the corresponding assignments/tests. This brought her grade down and she would not have passed the semester. I agreed to an independent study to get her up to date and complete her assignments. She was able to complete every requirement and eventually received a passing grade. She graduated and passed her registry exam. Several years later, I happened to see this student at Target. She came up to me and thanked me. She then told me how she had lived in her car for a brief time and how desperate she was to get out of that situation. Since her graduation, she had found a full-time position in radiology and was now married. She introduced me to her husband and told me they had just purchased a house. I often think about this student and how you never really know the whole story behind a student’s struggles. She was an inspiration to me and I am so thankful that I could be a part of her success.”

In retirement, Deb is looking forward to relaxing at her cottage with family and friends and also traveling. She’s hoping to visit Italy and Greece. Deb would like to take a photography class and painting class, and plans on reconnecting with old friends.

Deb, on behalf of your GRCC community, we all wish you the very best in retirement. Thank you so much for your service to GRCC and our students.

Colleges team up to train MRI techs

Community colleges especially colleges that are small or in rural areas often lack the enrollment to justify offering high-cost programs. The Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) is addressing that problem through collaboration.

… The participants in the MRI collaboration are Kellogg Community College, Grand Rapids Community College, Lake Michigan Community College, Lansing Community College, Mid-Michigan Community College and Grand Valley State University.
