Workforce development initiatives show signs of progress

By focusing on an internal culture that favors employee retention and support for external training initiatives, some West Michigan executives say they’ve largely avoided any problems associated with labor shortages.
… A founding member of the CWDA, ABC of West Michigan also works closely with organizations like Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) and Michigan Works!, largely as a means of identifying where specific gaps exist in construction training, developing curriculum and securing funding for the training programs.
Manufacturers solve problems internally, bring training in-house

… “This program provides the specific skills we are looking for while allowing our tradespeople to share their knowledge with others before retiring,” (Steelcase manager of corporate communications and public relations Katie) Woodruff said. “We have partnered with (Grand Rapids Community College) who provides an educational component, while our current tradespeople provide the on-the-job training. … We have had a mix of internal and external candidates join our apprentice program, which has proven to be a great balance.”

… Oscar Neal is a professor of mathematics and statistics at Grand Rapids Community College. He wants to help the district in developing youth by lending his advisory and planning skills. He cites enhancing performance and resourcefulness as key strengths and says he thrives on finding resolutions to problems. Neal, who is black, said his experience, educational qualifications and skills can be an asset.

Officials from the city of Grand Rapids and Grand Valley State University wish to remind students living downtown of compliance codes upheld by the city.

Grand Rapids, MI. — On April 13, the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee released its selections for the 2016-2017 All-American Teams. A familiar name was listed under First Team All-American, Sophomore, Jeffrey Drake-Todd. The six foot guard is the first in GRCC Men’s Basketball history to be named First Team All-American. Drake-Todd can add this award to the growing number of awards he has won for his efforts this past season. Which include, NJCAA Division II National All-Tournament Team, Region XII, District 9 Tournament MVP, GRCC Donald R. Black Male Athlete of the Year, First Team All-Region XII and First Team All-Conference.

MUSKEGON – At the end of the night one of two very good volleyball teams had to lose its first conference match of the season. Unfortunately that team was Muskegon Community College, which dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to archrival Grand Rapids Community College in a showdown on Thursday.

Four years ago a small audience gathered at Wealthy Street Theatre in Grand Rapids to talk about a rather unconventional topic: failure. They listened to leaders and well-known artists in their community openly own their past struggles and change the conversation that surrounds failure. The event was an immediate success, and Failure:Lab was born. Since then, this form of social expression and storytelling has gone viral on a global scale. In just the last few months Failure:Lab events have taken place in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Atlanta, SXSW in Austin, and India.
… When asked if there were any lasting effects as a result of the program, she (Kathy Crosby) replied, “The word ‘failure’ itself isn’t as frightening. We pitch ideas to the board and can comfortably and confidently describe next steps if it happens to fail. We aren’t afraid to use that word anymore.” In addition to Goodwill Industries, 58 student leaders from the Grand Valley State University Hauenstein Center have taken part in the program, as well as the Grand Rapids Community College administrative team.

After interviewing five highly qualified candidates to fill the seat vacated by David LaGrand, who was elected to the 75th District State House seat, the Grand Rapids Board of Education unanimously selected Jennifer Schottke at the end of March. She will be sworn in this Monday, April 18.
… Schottke serves as Director of Workforce Development & External Affairs for the Associated Builders & Contractors Association, Inc. (ABC). In this role, she connects students with the skilled trades. Schottke works with ABC, Grand Rapids Community College and its M-TEK (Michigan Technical Education Center), as well as businesses throughout the area. This blend of experience and skills brings a new perspective to the board, and this was one of the reasons members wholeheartedly backed Schottke.

The Lowell Area Schools Board of Education met at the Runciman Administration Building, 300 High St., on Monday, April 11. Board member Brian Krajewski did not attend the meeting; his absence was unexplained. The meeting lasted about 25 minutes and was attended by eight members of the public.
… “This is for a boys and girls swim team in cooperation with South Christian and Caledonia,” (Superintendent Greg) Pratt said. “It is the highest area of interest that’s out there, but yet not enough to have a team on our own. This group of young people would work with Caledonia primarily and then a few students from South Christian. They would swim out of the Grand Rapids Community College pool. […] Much like other teams of this nature, they’re self-funded. Students would have to raise the funds for that type of sport.”
