The Collegiate won six awards at the 2018 Michigan Press Association Convention and Gala last week.

Young driver in Caledonia area crash dies

GAINES TOWNSHIP, MI — A 23-year-old driver police say was not wearing a seat belt has died following a Sunday, Oct. 25 crash in the Caledonia area.

Alexandria Rogers, 23, of Caledonia, died Monday, Oct. 26, Kent County sheriff’s deputies confirmed.

(This article doesn’t mention it, but Alexandria Rogers is a GRCC student.)

Celebran la 11va entrega de Premios a la Excelencia Hispana César E. Chávez

Grand Rapids, MI.- El pasado miércoles 14 de octubre se llevo a cabo la 11va entrega Anual de Premios a la Excelencia Hispana César E. Chávez en Grand Valley State University ubicado en el 301 de la calle W. Fulton. El invitado especial fue el Reverendo George K. Heartwell, Alcalde de la ciudad, quien compartió una gran noche de gala, fiesta, distinción a estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad.

Eva Aguirre Cooper fue distinguida con el premio especial Águila. Jesús Delgado (Calvin College) recibió el premio Juventud. La Sra. Annie Evangelina Ortega obtuvo el Premio Golden Ciudadano. La Sra. María Vargas Guajardo y familia fueron la Familia del año. Mientras que Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) recibió el Premio por su apoyo a la comunidad hispana. Todos ellos, modelos a seguir que viven los principios de César E. Chávez: compromiso, determinación, respeto, coraje, compasión y sacrificio.

(Grand Rapids, MI – On Wednesday, October 14, the 11th Annual Awards for Excellence Hispanic Cesar E. Chavez took place at Grand Valley State University, located at 301 W. Fulton Street. The special guest was the Reverend George K. Heartwell , mayor of the city, who shared a great night’s gala, distinction to students and community members.

Eva Aguirre-Cooper was awarded the special prize. Jesus Delgado (Calvin College) received the Youth Award. Annie Evangelina Ortega won the Golden Citizen Award. Maria Vargas Guajardo and family were the Family of the Year . While Grand Rapids Community College received an award for its support of the Hispanic community. All of them are role models who live the principles of Cesar Chavez: commitment, determination , respect, courage , compassion and sacrifice.)

East Grand Rapids voters to decide on three commission seats

East Grand Rapids residents will decide who serves on three City Commission seats one in each ward in the Nov. 3 election.

… Karey Hamrick, 45, 3004 Oakwood Drive, is a real-estate investor and stay-at-home mother. She received an associate’s degree from Grand Rapids Community College and a bachelor’s degree in television production from Ferris State University.
