TRIO Student Support Services Students Connie Dock, Amina Elamin, Nhung Pham, and Monica Rivera presented at the MI-CAPP Student Leadership Summit this past Saturday, 2/16/19 in Ann Arbor, MI. Their topic, “Study Abroad – A World Waiting to be Explored” focused on identifying, planning and financing this type of experiential learning opportunity and why students should try to fit this into their time in college.

Nhung Pham shared her personal motivation for applying to a program in the Netherlands for this upcoming Summer: “I came to the United States 4 years ago, and I was not prepared. I felt very overwhelmed by the people, language, and strange rules. Nothing felt familiar. I never would have dreamed that 4 years later I would be excited to study in another country but I am! I’m ready and prepared this time and I can’t wait!”

TRIO Student Support Services sends 8 GRCC students to MTU for Summer Research

TRIO/SSS has partnered with Michigan Technical University (MTU), for the 14th year in a row, to provide GRCC students a first-hand research experience.  Karl Jovinge, Breianna Bertossi, Alannah Elliott, Benjamin Craig, Anthoni Phonxana, Breana Gallarzo, Joseph Day, and Nick Lopez are participating in the 7-week intensive learning opportunity.  They will be paired with faculty and assist with current research that ranges from engineering to human resources.

They will experience life at a four-year institution by living on campus, attending a seminar course, and working alongside research faculty.  For most students, this opportunity would not be possible without the financial support they also receive.  MTU gives each student a $2,500 stipend for their participation.  The financial support means students can focus on their learning and clarifying what their academic goals will be moving forward.

They will present their research to fellow classmates, faculty, and staff on June 22nd at MTU.  To learn more about this partnership program, please contact TRIO/SSS at 616-234-4150.

TRIO collecting supplies for Puerto Rico

A quick update on TRIO’s ongoing Love Puerto Rico Campaign: We were able to ship successfully 6 small boxes with supplies. We have attached a picture of two of our students getting the boxes ready! We have kept in touch with our colleagues there — we have one student who is visiting Puerto Rico right now and will be meeting with the director of the SSS Program, and we are hoping to have a student-to-student Skype session.

We will be collecting supplies on Tuesday, March 13, during our TRIO/Palooza event from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in Room 122 ATC! Or we can pick up your donations from your offices – or you can drop them by our offices located on the 3rd Floor of the Student Center (Room 332) by March 14th!
