TRiO Fundraiser – Thank you from Haiti

The TRiO Peer Mentors want to thank the GRCC community again for your support in our donut and apple sale at the end of November. Your generosity raised over $900, which has sponsored our student through ninth grade. From Kisten Olsen, Director of Student Sponsorship at the The Power of Education Foundation:

“Thank you for renewing your sponsorship of Mikerlange Abraham! Your support gives Mikerlange an opportunity that half of the children in Haiti do not have – the opportunity to go to school. Research indicates that for every year Mikerlange attends school, she increases her potential earning power as an adult and the likelihood that her own future children will be healthier and better educated. Literacy opens doors for children like Mikerlange to become productive, contributing members of their communities. Thanks to your generous donation, Mikerlange is able to live a healthier and more secure life. We appreciate your continued support of Mikerlange and The Power of Education Foundation!”

GRCC community supports student in Haiti

Our TRiO Students would like to thank the GRCC Community for rallying to buy dozens and dozens of donuts and apples to sponsor the education of Mikerlange Habraham, an eighth-grade student at the Power of Education Foundation’s school in Haiti.

Special thanks to Matt Coullard, Jim Peterson, Maggie Montes-Spruit, Anna Maria Clark, Penni Weninger and Dan Zehr, and Gunnar Nyblad Farms and Blok Orchard Farms for the delicious apples they donated.

The Power of Education Fund is a Grand Rapids-based organization incorporated in 2009. Their school in Fontamara, a neighborhood of Port au Prince, Haiti, educates over 225 students from Kindergarden to 8th grade. The public school system in Haiti is currently unable to provide children with access to education and private schools are far too expensive for a majority of families in the area. providing free access to high quality education, primary medical care and daily food support to students who otherwise would have no access to an education.

The funds we raised together will ensure Mikerlange’s tuition, food and medical care through ninth grade. Look for more fund raisers: Mikerlange will still have 3 grades to go to graduate!
