Overcoming homelessness to get her degree, she’s ready to help others

Five years after sharing her story about growing up in poverty,  a mature, confident, 22-year-old Jordan Lovett walked into a local coffee shop. She had graduated days earlier from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

… I checked in with Lovett the next winter.  She was struggling as a freshman at Aquinas College. Her grades weren’t great and she was stressed out trying to work, pay the bills, and complete 18 credits. She had already enrolled in Grand Rapids Community College for the next semester, to save money. She was one of many students in college who have the imposter feeling of, “I don’t belong here.” I wrote her second story as a bigger piece about how barriers for low-income college students don’t end at the Admissions Office door.

Local volleyball seniors had the chance to suit up one last time in their school colors Tuesday as Muskegon Community College hosted an All-Star game for outgoing players.

Paulsen and Carlyle got an early introduction to their new home Tuesday, as they will take their talents to play for the Jayhawks this fall. Zenas is set to set at Hillsdale College, while Strohmeyer will continue to terminate points for Lake Superior State University. (Kailey) Carmean and (Kylie) Oberlin plan to remain teammates while attending Grand Rapids Community College and Core will bring the heat at Hope College.

Grand Rapids school board approves interim superintendent contract

The Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists Announces the Train-the-trainer scholarship

In pursuit of the goal of doubling the number of female motorcycle riders by 2020, the Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists (WCM) has established a train-the-trainer scholarship program in partnership with the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning and Michigan Rider Education Program. The scholarship program will allow for up to 10 WCM paid members to attend the RiderCoach Preparation course to become a certified motorcycle safety coach. In Michigan, only 11 percent (27 of 235) of certified RiderCoaches are female.

ALLENDALE, Mich. (WOOD) — You’ve likely seen them on various college campuses in West Michigan: blue light emergency call stations that can connect students in distress with the nearest police department.

They’re at Western Michigan University, Hope College, and even Grand Rapids Community College, among others. But you won’t find them at Grand Valley State University in Allendale. Now, a group of students are trying to change that.

Hope College students start DACA scholarship

In October, Hope College students organized a march to support those in the rescinded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which protected hundreds of thousands of young immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as children.

For some students, that march was only the beginning of activism supporting DACA recipients. Four Hope College students — Alejandra Gomez Limon, Emily Salazar, Jonathan Mays and Jocelyn Gallegos — have created a scholarship at Hope specifically for DACA students. Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Community College have similar scholarships.

Kent County considers early childhood tax for November ballot

She will receive access to professional development and share her insights and expertise. Blackboard is the course-management system GRCC faculty uses. The cost of attending college every year gets higher every year. Colleges and universities across the state usually raise tuition prior to the new academic year, often there is also an increase in financial aid to help offset the impact.

Amanda Price bill opens possibility for lowering community college costs

Gov. Rick Snyder has signed House Bill 4265, sponsored by state Rep. Amanda Price, R-Park Township, that would give voters in counties that don’t border community college districts the chance to approve joining a district.

… “Think of Grand Rapids Community College,” Price said. “If we wanted it here in Holland, we would have to go through the whole process of becoming accredited, which is not likely to happen even in Ottawa County. We have to be a contiguous district, but there are several school districts and communities in between.”

Ferris State, Grand Valley coaches weigh in on hype and over-hype of rivalry

Ferris State vs. Grand Valley State went from a game to a rivalry once Tony Annese arrived in 2012, even though the Bulldogs coach downplays its significance.

… Annese, who has re-energized the Bulldogs program as a whole, brought intrigue to the Grand Valley State game just by his local connection. He won three state championships at Muskegon, was head coach at Grand Rapids Community College and was well known throughout West Michigan before he was hired at Ferris State.

Dominant middle hitter Rachel Brown leading MCC volleyball to a big season

MUSKEGON — Opponents have come to respect, and even fear, Rachel Brown on the volleyball court.

… Brown is a big reason by the MCC volleyball team is having another big year, with a 19-9 overall record and an 8-1 mark in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference. The team is one game behind first-place Grand Rapids Community College in the conference.

GREENVILLE — After working as a nurse for 10 years, Melody Teegardin decided to open Flat River Medical on Lafayette Street in Greenville in October 2015.

… Teegardin is also working on becoming a state testing center. Right now, the closest testing centers are at Grand Rapids Community College and in Mount Pleasant. Before she can become a testing center, she has make sure the basement meets the state-set standards.

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Smith healthy

COLUMBUS — Wide receiver Corey Smith’s career with the Ohio State Buckeyes could have ended when he broke his leg during a game against Indiana on Oct. 3 last season.

… Smith, a graduate of Buchtel High School in Akron, is in his fourth season with the Buckeyes and his sixth year of college. He played for Grand Rapids Community College in 2011. When that program was discontinued, he left for East Mississippi Community College in the small town of Scooba, Miss.

All across the nation, college tuition prices continue to rise, and the state of Michigan is no different.
In June, the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents voted to increase in-state tuition by 3.9 percent, while in-state tuition at Michigan State University jumped 3.7 percent for freshmen and sophomores and 3.9 percent for juniors and seniors. Here in West Michigan, Grand Valley State University the regions largest voted to increase tuition by 4 percent, while Grand Rapids Community College saw a 2.8 percent rise in tuition.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Silver Line bus service has been on the road for seven months and officials said so far it’s been a smooth ride.

… Morgan Fisher, a student at Grand Rapids Community College, said she had never used public transportation before the Silver Line came to town, but decided to give it a try.

“I actually get on the bus at 28th and Division and I come right down to GRCC and I don’t have to pay for parking for school so it makes it a lot easier and more affordable,” said Fisher.
