She also recently received a Grand Rapids Area Black Businesses award as well as a Giant award. This year, Austin will host the Giant Awards.

… Expansion: Walker-based Axis Company LLC plans to invest $4 million into a new facility. The automation provider expects to create 50 jobs in West Michigan when it builds the new plant at an undisclosed location in Kent County, according to a statement from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. Axis received a performance-based $400,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund, as well as $125,000 via the Michigan New Jobs Training Program from Grand Rapids Community College. The company specializes in designing, programming and building robotic automation and assembly equipment. The Right Place Inc., a Grand Rapids-based economic development organization, helped Axis facilitate incentives for the project.

Tenor Jon Lovegrove has recently performed with GVSU Opera Theatre as Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra as Rodolfo (La Bohème), and with Opera Grand Rapids as Shem (Noah’s Flood) and Remendado (Carmen). He has been a member of the OGR chorus since 2007. In that time, he has appeared in multiple productions, including I Dream, Rigoletto, and The Barber of Seville. He is one of OGR’s Emerging Artists and has also performed the role of Timothy in 2nd Act Opera’s production of Help, Help, the Globolinks! Mr. Lovegrove was a soloist for the Michigan premier of Benjamin Britten’s The World of the Spirit with the Evangelical Choral Society in 2013. He has performed with the ECS on multiple other occasions. Mr. Lovegrove holds an Associate’s Degree in Vocal Performance from Grand Rapids Community College. While pursuing that degree, he was a member of the Grand Rapids Community College Choir, Madrigal Singers, and Shades of Blue Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

From state prison to state capitol

GRAND RAPIDS — Salvador Gutierrez knew he had hit rock bottom when he landed in prison on a couple of drug charges.

… Gutierrez moved to Grand Rapids, where he also is enrolled at Grand Rapids Community College and is working on a degree in industrial technology. He plans to get into an apprenticeship program and work toward getting his journeyman’s card.

TITLE IX WORKSHOP

As part of GRCC’s efforts to aid in every student’s success story, we want all our employees to understand our Title IX requirements and policies. Title IX and GRCC’s Sexual Misconduct policies identify how we respond when we receive incident reports related to sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic or dating violence, sexual exploitation, stalking, and any other form of gender discrimination. This course will review what those incident reports may look like and how you may encounter these issues as GRCC employees. We will also discuss the college’s response process, including investigations, sanctions, and interim measures to protect all students and their right to an education. Title IX also covers trans-gender issues as part of gender discrimination, as well as issues unique to pregnant students. We will discuss these briefly as well as part of our review of various forms of gender discrimination which may affect us on college campuses. Bring your questions!

This session will provide a general overview on the process of strategic planning at GRCC and how it connects to other key endeavors such as accreditation, department planning, performance evaluation and budgeting. GRCC uses a 90-person teamed called the Strategic Leadership Team to develop and implement the strategic plan including 3 ends, 6 strategies, 17 College Action Projects, and 8 indicators of success. If you have ever been curious about the SLT, why we have a strategic plan, or how you fit into the strategic planning process, this session is for you.
