‘Emergency Evacuation Drill, Test, and Exercise’ on Thursday, August 17

On Thursday, Aug. 17, GRCC will be conducting its annual Emergency Evacuation Drill, Test and Exercise as required by the Clery Act. At, or shortly after, 10 a.m. Campus Police and the Communications Department will send out a notice via the Emergency Phone Alert System and RAVE system advising everyone of a TEST tornado drill.

Everyone on campus will be required to evacuate to the nearest tornado shelter location. As a reminder, the shelter locations can be found on the evacuation maps located in classrooms, public meeting spaces, and on the Campus Police website. Building Coordinators (as identified in the college’s Emergency Response Framework) will assist in directing people to the appropriate shelter locations. Once everyone is safely in the shelters, we will give the all-clear, and everyone can return to their normal activities.

If you are aware of an activity on campus that would be significantly impacted by this drill between 10-10:30 a.m., please contact Chief Whitman as soon as possible via email, with the event and room number for clarification of compliance. (We have already addressed Fast Track and Accuplacer testing in the ATC).

At 1 p.m., GRCC’s Emergency Management Team, along with local police, fire, and EMS partners, will be participating in a table top exercise to practice our response to a significant weather emergency. The scenario for the exercise is a tornado touch down and damage to a portion of the GRCC campus. Our objectives include: discussion of internal actions in response to this type of emergency, decision making in the absence of critical information, communication processes, interaction with our community partners, as well as development of recovery plans.

We will send out a debrief of the day’s events, and summary of our take aways early next week. If you have any questions or concerns about the Emergency Evacuation Drill, Test, or Table Top Exercise, please contact Vicki Janowiak at 234-3565 or Chief Rebecca Whitman at 234-4012.
