Area high school grads making an impact on college sports scene

KENTWOOD — The winter season is well underway for local college athletes. Following is a look at some area high school graduates who have been making news both this winter season on the collegiate level.

… Former East Kentwood standout Michael Spicer is leading the way for the Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team. A sophomore guard, Spicer leads the Raiders in scoring at 14 points per game, with a season-high 24-point outburst against Oakland Community College. Spicer is adding 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Faculty, staff cap and gown orders due by February 26

The GRCC Bookstore is taking orders for caps and gowns for staff and faculty through February 26th. If you are in need of any commencement regalia, please stop in the bookstore and fill out the form to order yours today! Due to turnaround time and production needs, all orders and prepayments must be in by February 26, 2016, to be ready in time for the April GRCC Commencement ceremony.

Business Department’s Advising Days start today

Business Department Advising Days will take place 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. January 25 and 26 at the Meijer Center for Business (second floor of the Main Building).

Business faculty  members will discuss GRCC degree requirements in class and answer questions. A GRCC counseling representative will be available in the Meijer Center for Business to answer student questions.

This is a great opportunity to talk with your professor or the counseling representative about course requirements to obtain your associate degree at GRCC or transfer requirements.

Bottled Water Drive for Flint

Grand Rapids Community College TRIO Upward Bound program is collecting bottled water for the Flint water crisis. Upward Bound supports the efforts of providing water to the community members of FIint during their state of emergency. GRCC employees and students can drop off a case of bottled water or a gallon of water to the TRIO Upward Bound Office 110 Sneden Hall. Upward Bound students will be collecting donated bottles of water at City High, Innovation Central, Ottawa Hills, and University Prep. Water collection will take place January 25 to the 29th.

Community involvement and responsibility are paramount pillars of the Upward Bound program. The donations of water will be given to the Upward Bound program at Mott Community College for further distribution.
