GRCC Story Van needs volunteers

GRCC’s Story Van will be in the Sparta Town & Country Days parade on Saturday, July 19.  The parade begins at noon.  The van will be set up after the parade, probably about 1 p.m.  We need of volunteers to help record people who will be telling their GRCC story, or who want to wish GRCC a happy
birthday.  It is very simple — you just push a button!

There is a lot to do at Sparta Town & Country Days before or after your time at the van.

If you would like to help with this part of the GRCC 100-year anniversary celebration, contact Liz Timmer at ltimmer1@comcast.net or
457-3708.

100 Ways to Give: Finance and Administration collects for S.H.O.E.S.

The Finance and Administration team is partnering with In The Image, to help our area elementary students — GRCC’s future students!  Through the S.H.O.E.S program (Shoes Help Our Elementary Students), In The Image provides brand new back-to-school shoes for at-risk students in Grand Rapids, Wyoming and Kentwood elementary schools.  The type of shoes distributed are athletic shoes so students can participate in physical education, extra-curricular activities, and enjoy a fun and safe recess with their friends.

Just $15 provides a new pair of shoes for a child in need, $150 for a sports team and entire classroom for just $375.  Please help us make a difference in the life of a child by sending a monetary gift to Campus Police for the S.H.O.E.S. program by August 1.

We are also in need of new socks- each pair of shoes is delivered with a pair of socks. Your donation may be dropped off at the Grand Rapids Community College Police Department, at 25 Lyon, or can be sent through Inter-office mail.  If you prefer, contact Dispatch at 234-4910 and an officer will be happy to personally pick up your donation.  Checks should be made payable to “In The Image-S.H.O.E.S.”  If you wish to receive a receipt for tax purposes, please make sure we have your name and address, if paying by check, you will be all set.

‘Orange is the New Black’ gives Grand Rapids actress Aubrey Sinn time in spotlight

July 11, 2014; MLive

Aubrey Sinn’s most high-profile acting job was one of her easiest to land. One day, she was auditioning for Orange is the New Black, and the next day, she had the role.

… She studied acting at Grand Rapids Community College, and credits instructors Tom Kaechele and Mark Amenta for honing her methods. Ten years ago, she moved to New York City to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating as a drama major. Her first role after college was for a musical theater festival, playing the Hero character in About Face, a version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, set in the 1950s.

Two Grand Rapids area coaches to be inducted tonight in Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame

July 8, 2014; MLive

GRAND RAPIDS — Longtime Grand Rapids area baseball coaches Tim Johnson and Thad Abel received phone calls this spring that left them humbled and honored.

(Article doesn’t mention it, but Tim Johnson works in Ford Fieldhouse.)
